STANFORD, Calif. - No. 3 UCLA's upset bid of No. 1 Stanford fell short on Sunday evening, 8-5, as the Bruins dropped to 11-1 on the year. Freshman Rachel Fattal led the Bruins with three scores and Sami Hill had a game-high eight saves.
In the loss to the Cardinal (8-0), UCLA scored a season-low five goals and only had three Bruins score in the game. In addition to Fattal's hat trick, the Bruins received one goal apiece from sophomore attacker Emily Donohoe and junior attacker Kelly Ronimus.
The Bruins got off to a great start, leading the two-time defending NCAA Champions, 3-1 at the end of the first quarter. The Cardinal outscored the Bruins 2-1 in the second period, but UCLA took a 4-3 lead into the halftime break. Stanford pitched a shutout in the third period and took a 5-4 lead into the final period. The Cardinal went on to win the final period, 3-1, to win the game, 8-5.
Redshirt sophomore goalkeeper Sami Hill had a game-high eight saves against the Cardinal. Kate Baldoni was credited with six saves for Stanford.
