Box Score

LOS ANGELES - Freshman Bojana Todorovic posted her first career double-double with a personal-best 14 kills and 13 digs, while senior Kaitlin Sather also had a double-double with 13 kills and 16 digs, as the 16th-ranked Bruins knocked off #9 California in four sets on Saturday at Pauley Pavilion. Set scores were 25-20, 25-19, 22-25, 25-22.

The Bruins improve to 12-5 overall and 2-2 in Pac-10 play, while the Golden Bears fall to 8-5 and 1-2 in league action.

Sophomore Katie Camp was also in double figures in kills with 10, hitting .421. Junior Dicey McGraw had nine kills, while sophomore Amanda Gil added eight kills and eight blocks. Sophomore Lainey Gera posted 14 digs and freshman Lauren Cook had 44 assists. The Bruins hit .241 as a team.

The Bruins didn't trail in the first set, scoring five of the first six points. Sather notched a kill on the first point of the match, and after a Cal sideout, the Bruins received a service error by the Golden Bears, a Cook/Gil combo block, a Cal attack error and a Gera ace to make it 5-1. California got as close as two on numerous occasions, but were unable to get even.

Leading 13-11, UCLA scored three straight on a kill by Todorovic and a kill and an ace by Cook to go up by five. The Bruins held a five-point lead four more times in the set before winning it on a Sather kill to take the opener 25-20. The redshirt senior had six of the Bruins' 14 kills in the first. In an outstanding offensive set, Cal out-hit UCLA .414 to .385.

The Golden Bears got their first lead of the match to open the second set, but never had more than a one-point edge. Trailing 4-3, the Bruins scored three straight on a Cal ball handling error and kills by Todorovic and Camp to go ahead 6-4. UCLA never trailed for the rest of the set. Up 8-7, the Bruins got a kill by Sather, a Cal attack error and a Gil solo roof to go up by four.

UCLA's lead stayed between two and six for the rest of the set. Leading 19-17, the Bruins got back-to-back errors by the Golden Bears and a combo block by Gil and Todorovic to go up by five. After a Cal sideout, Todorovic had a kill and Gil posted an ace to take a set-high lead of six at 24-18. On the Bruins' second set point, Todorovic had her team-high sixth kill of the set to win it 25-19. Camp, McGraw and Sather added three kills apiece, as the Bruins out-hit the Golden Bears .237 to .156.

The third set was a back-and-forth affair until a late Cal run got the visitors back in the match. The Bruins scored four of the first six points on kills by Camp, McGraw and Todorovic and a combo block by Gil and McGraw. Cal came back with four in a row to go up 6-4, but a mini 3-0 UCLA run on a solo block by Gil, a Sather kill and a Cook ace made it 7-6. The Bruins increased their lead to three at 13-10, but the Golden Bears scored five of the next six to take a 15-14 edge and force UCLA into a timeout.

During the break, the lights directly above the Pauley Pavilion court went out, causing a 15-minute delay. Once play resumed, the Bruins tied the set back up at 15, 16 and 17, but four in a row by the Golden Bears gave them a 21-17 advantage. UCLA made things interesting late, getting to within one at 23-22, but Cal scored the final two points of the set to take it 25-22. Todorovic had five kills in the third, while Sather added three. The Bruins were out-hit .227 to .175.

In another tight, back-and-forth affair in the fourth, there were seven ties and three lead changes, but the Bruins prevailed with a 25-22 win to take the match. With Cal leading 10-8, UCLA scored six straight to go up 14-10. Following a Golden Bear service error, two McGraw kills sandwiched between a pair of Camp spikes and a Todorovic ace made it a four-point lead. The Bruins never saw their lead dip below two for the rest of the set.

Up 15-13, the Bruins scored four straight on a Todorovic kill, a Cook ace, a Gil/McGraw combo block and a Cal attack error to take a six-point lead, which was a set high. California staved off the first two match points, but a kill by McGraw on attempt number three gave the Bruins the win. Gil had six kills in the fourth, Camp posted four and McGraw added three. Cal out-hit UCLA .235 to .220 in the fourth.

Hana Cutura (17), Tarah Murrey (14) and Mindi Wiley (13) all had double figures in kills for Cal, which hit .252 as a team.

The Bruins host their cross-town rival USC next Friday at Pauley Pavilion. Start time is at 7 p.m. Gametracker and free audio and video will be available on UCLABruins.com.
