Fifth-Ranked Bruins Fall in Four at Oregon

EUGENE, Ore. - Senior Ali Daley had a team-high 16 kills and nine digs, but the fifth-ranked Bruins fell to #11 Oregon in four sets on Friday at McArthur Court. Scores were 22-25, 25-23, 17-25, 21-25.

The Bruins drop their second straight match and fall to 10-3 and 0-2 in Pac-10 play, while the Ducks improve to 12-3 and 1-2 in league action.

Daley had just one error on the evening in 45 swings for a .333 hitting percentage. Senior Nellie Spicer had a double-double for the third time in four matches with 40 assists and 15 digs. Senior Jessica Fine recorded her third straight contest with at least 20 digs, notching 21. Sophomore Dicey McGraw added nine kills. The Bruins hit .205 as a team.

The Ducks never trailed in the first. The Bruins were tied twice at 7- and 8-all, but a 5-1 run by Oregon made it a 13-9 lead. The Ducks got their lead up to as many as five at 20-15 before UCLA went on a late run, scoring five of the next to six to get to within one at 21-20. Daley began the run with a kill and then teamed up with freshman Amanda Gil on a block. Daley added another kill during the run, while senior Jade Machado also had an ace. The Bruins were still within one at 22-21, but the Ducks scored three of the final four points of the set to win it 25-22. Daley had three kills, as the Bruins hit just .156, while the Ducks hit .209.

The Bruins staged a late run in the second to even the match at one apiece. Tied at six, Oregon went on a 4-1 run to take a 11-7 advantage. The Ducks still led 19-15, but five in a row by the Bruins gave them a 20-19 edge. Daley had two kills and a block during the run, while Gil had a kill and block. UCLA never relinquished the lead for the rest of the set, winning it on a kill by freshman Katie Camp to post the 25-23 victory. McGraw had five kills in the second, while Daley had four, as the Bruins hit .250. Oregon swung at a .231 clip.

UCLA held a slim lead early in set three, but a long run by Oregon turned things into a rout. With the Bruins on top 7-6, the Ducks went on a 14-6 run to go ahead by seven at 20-13. UCLA could get no closer than six the rest of the way, as Oregon got its lead up to as many as nine at 23-14 before winning it 25-17. Daley had four kills, while Spicer added three. UCLA hit .231, while Oregon had a great .432 hitting percentage.

The fourth set was close early on, but another late run by the Ducks gave them the match victory. UCLA held an 11-10 advantage, but five straight by Oregon made it 15-11 Ducks. Oregon's lead stayed between three and five for the rest of the set before the Ducks won it 25-21. Daley added five more kills in the fourth. The Bruins hit .171 to the Ducks' .256 percentage.

Gorana Maricic led the Ducks with 22 kills, while Sonja Newcombe had 19 kills, 18 digs and six blocks. Katie Swoboda posted 37 digs. Oregon hit .278.
