Meyers Drysdale to Sign Copies of New Book at UCLA May 5

April 30, 2012

Women's basketball pioneer and UCLA legend Ann Meyers Drysdale will be signing copies of her new book, You Let Some Girl Beat You?, on Saturday, May 5 (Alumni Day) at the Ackerman Union/UCLA BookZone at noon. Meyers Drysdale was the first woman in UCLA history to receive a full athletic scholarship, and she helped lead the 1978 Bruin women's basketball team to the AIAW National Championship. In 1988, she became the first woman inducted into the UCLA Athletics Hall of Fame.

A must-read for any basketball fan, You Let Some Girl Beat You? recounts Meyers Drysdale's one-of-a-kind experiences that led her to becoming a 1993 Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame inductee and a nationally-known sports network broadcaster for over 30 years and currently the vice president of the WNBA's Phoenix Mercury and NBA's Phoenix Suns. In the book, she opens up about the struggle to play sports in school, receiving the first full athletic scholarship awarded to a female by a Division I university and becoming the only woman to sign a contract with an NBA team. Plus, she shares intimate memories of falling in love with Los Angeles Dodgers baseball great Don Drysdale and the heartache of being widowed with three children under the age of five.

The autobiography will be released nationally on June 15 in time for the celebration of the 40th anniversary of Title IX passing into law. The book also features a forward by Julius Erving, as well as photos from Meyers Drysdale's life.

"The book is about hopes and dreams," said Meyers Drysdale. "I've been blessed to be part of so many incredible experiences, and I thought it was time to tell my story. I hope that the book serves as a reminder to people that anything can be accomplished if you set your mind to it. Plus, releasing the book in conjunction with the celebration of the 40th anniversary of Title IX is a perfect reminder of how far female athletics has come and to honor that I'll be donating a portion of the book proceeds to Phoenix Mercury Charities."

Recently, the U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced that its annual Women's National Player of the Year Award will be named the Ann Meyers Drysdale National Player of the Year Award after the former Bruin great who led UCLA to a national title in 1978.

The award honors one of the all-time greats of the game. Meyers Drysdale was the first four-time All-American (1975-78); helped lead the U.S. women's basketball team to a Silver Medal at the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal, Canada; became the first woman's player to sign a contract with the NBA (1979 Indiana Pacers) and has also been inducted into the Women's Basketball (1999) and FIBA (International Basketball Federation/2007) Halls of Fame.

Meyers Drysdale has two sons, Don Drysdale Jr. and Darren, and a daughter Drew, who is a freshman high jumper on the UCLA women's track & field team.
