UCLA Women's Volleyball Signs Three to National Letters of Intent

Nov. 21, 2007

LOS ANGELES - UCLA women's volleyball head coach Andy Banachowski has announced the signings of Katie Camp, Amanda Gil and Sara Sage to national letters of intent.

"This is an exciting group of players we are bringing in for next season," Banachowski said. "It will certainly give us the height we are looking for to contend in the Pac-10."

Camp, a 6-5 middle blocker, helped Cardinal Gibbons High School (Raleigh, N.C.) to a third-straight state championship in 2007 with a 31-2 record. She nearly had a triple-double in the title match, posting 11 kills, seven blocks and 10 digs. In her senior year, Camp hit .628 to set a Crusaders' single-season record and added a team-best 152 blocks. Her .528 career hitting percentage is a school record and her 968 kills and 411 total blocks are second on the school's all-time lists. Camp played club with Triangle Volleyball Club and helped her team to its best-ever performance at AAU and Junior Olympic Nationals.

"Katie is rounding back into form after missing her junior year with an injury," Banachowski said. "Coming back from that and helping her team to a State championship in her senior year is quite an accomplishment. Katie is an outstanding middle blocker who is extremely talented hitting behind the setter."

Gil, a 6-6 middle blocker/right side hitter, is a two-time West Catholic Athletic League Player of the Year for Archbishop Mitty High School in San Jose, Calif. She and the Monarchs won their fourth straight CIF NorCal Tournament last week and will play in the second round of the CIF State Tournament on Nov. 24. Gil helped the Monarchs to a CIF State title in 2004 and a runner-up finish in 2006, along with four straight WCAL championships. Following her junior season, she was named Central Coast Section Player of the Year and Cal Hi Sports Player of the Year. Gil played club with Vision Volleyball and was a member of the 2007 U.S. Girls' Youth National Team.

"Amanda is one of the most highly-regarded recruits in the nation. She has the potential to compete in the middle right away. She has a great awareness as a blocker and is an accomplished attacker. The addition of Katie and Amanda will shore up the middle after the graduation of Nana Meriwether and Rachell Johnson over the last two years."

Sage, a 6-4 outside hitter, was also a member of the 2007 U.S. Girls' Youth National Team. She prepped at Huron High School in Huron, Ohio. A three-time All-Ohio mention, Sage was named to the first team in each of her final two seasons. She set single-season records with an incredible .910 hitting percentage as a sophomore and 531 kills as a junior. In Sage's junior campaign, Huron went to the Division III State Final Four and claimed the Division III Regional Championship. Her teams also won four straight Sandusky Bay Conference titles. Sage played club with the Toledo Volleyball Club.

"Sara has all the tools to be an excellent volleyball player," Banachowski said. "She was slowed by an injury early in her high school career, but she overcame them to have a dominating senior season. Sara is a very capable passer, which will allow her to play on the outside as well as at middle blocker/right side hitter."
