Sophomore Rhonda Watkins (Port of Spain, Trinidad/Bishop Anstey HS) of the UCLA Women's Track & Field team was selected as the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for May 21-28.
Watkins won her second consecutive long jump crown at the NCAA West Region Championships in Eugene, OR last weekend, as the sophomore put forth one of the top performances in the world this year. Watkins jumped a lifetime-best (non-wind-aided) 22-4.50 to win the long jump competition, out-distancing the rest of the field by a foot and a half. Her mark moves her to No. 2 in the world this season, and she maintains her spot as the top collegiate jumper in the NCAA. It also broke the 19-year-old Pac-10 record set by former Bruin Gail Devers in 1988. Watkins now ranks second all-time at UCLA behind only track great Jackie Joyner-Kersee. The sophomore also finished third in the high jump (5-11.25) and automatically qualified for both the long and high at the NCAA Championships.
This is Watkins' third UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
