The No.12/18 UCLA Track & Field teams will take on the No.10/7 LSU Tigers and TCU Horned Frogs for their first home meet of the 2013 outdoor season in the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational Saturday, April 6. Field events will begin at 9:00 am PT and running events will kick off at 12:30 pm PT.

This meet marks only the second and third times (for the men and women, respectively) in school history that the Bruins will take on the LSU Tigers in a dual meet. The first and only meeting on the men's side was a 77-77 tie in 1989 at Drake. The Bruin women also competed against the Tigers in '89, claiming an 85-51 victory over LSU to even the overall head-to-head score at 1-1.

The Bruins are coming off an extremely successful week in Texas, where they recorded three event victories and 20 top-five finishes. All three event titles came on the field at the Relays, as the Bruins swept the hammer throw events with strong performances from All-Americans Ida Storm (66.17m/217-1) and Alec Faldermeyer (67.95m/228-10). The final win came from discus thrower Julian Wruck, who threw a meet record 66.01m/216-7 while once again setting the Bruin's all-time record (Wruck set the school record last weekend against Texas/Arkansas as well).

The 12th-ranked men and 18th-ranked women will compete at Drake Stadium for the first time in 2013, and will look to continue the early success they have found on both the track and on the field. However, this will be one of the toughest tasks for both squads as both LSU and TCU bring highly touted athletes to the table.

For the No. 10 Tiger men, sprinter Aaron Ernest comes into Saturday seeded fourth nationally in the 100m dash (10.18), a mark set last week in a second place finish at the Texas Relays. He, along with sixth-seeded Horned Frog Charles Silmon (10.30), will present major challenges to senior captain Maxwell Dyce, who currently sits 28th in the national seedings for the 100m (10.46). The three athletes will also have an exciting showdown in the men's 4x100m relay. Dyce and the Bruin team of Blake Selig, Karlton Rolle and Yusef Merriweather come into this weekend seeded 15th nationally (40.09), however they will be competing against some of the most elite relay teams in the country. Both LSU and TCU each have two separate 4x100m relays teams seeded inside the top-15, and Ernest and Silmon are major reasons for their successes.

Another key matchup on the men's side will be in the discus throw, where the 2013 world leader Julian Wruck (66.01m/216-7) will look to stay undefeated and uphold the nation's top seed in the event against second-seeded Rodney Brown of LSU. Brown (62.88m/206-3) is the only other male discus thrower in the country besides Wruck to top the 200-feet mark in the 2013 season, a mark he set in a second place finish behind Wruck at the Texas Relays.

But perhaps the Bruins' biggest individual competition will come on the women's side, as LSU brings 5-time NCAA champion Kimberlyn Duncan to the track for the women's 200m dash. In 2012, the 9-time All-American Duncan defended both her NCAA Indoor and Outdoor titles in the 200m dash and was one spot away from being selected to the USA Olympic team at the US Olympic Trials in Eugene, OR. She will certainly present a challenge to both the Bruins and Horned Frogs this weekend, but it is the type of challenge that both teams must rise to if they want to come away with a dual meet victory against the 7th-ranked Tigers.

The meet will be scored as a triple double dual, with the scoring breakdown 5-3-1 for individual events and 5-0 for relay events. There is no limit to the number of athletes per event that can score for any given institution.
