Dec. 4, 2010

Box Score

AUSTIN, Texas - Sophomore Rachael Kidder notched 22 kills, senior Dicey McGraw added 18 and junior Sara Sage totaled 11, but the ninth-ranked Bruins fell to #9-seed and sixth-ranked Texas in four sets on Saturday in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Set scores were 23-25, 25-20, 18-25, 24-26.

The Bruins' season concludes with a record of 22-9, while the Longhorns improve to 25-5.

Sophomore Bojana Todorovic recorded 17 digs and a pair of aces, while junior Lainey Gera added 11 digs. Freshman Mariana Aquino had seven kills and four blocks, while junior Lauren Van Orden produced 52 assists and three blocks. The Bruins hit .260 for the match.

The opening set featured nine ties and neither team led by more than three. UCLA got out to an early 5-3 lead on kills by Kidder and McGraw, an ace from Todorovic and two Texas attack errors. But the Longhorns came back with six of the next eight to take a 9-7 edge. The home squad would not trail for the rest of the set. UCLA tied the score at 9, 12, 13 and 14-all, but a 3-0 Longhorn run gave them a 17-14 advantage.

The Bruins still trailed 21-19, but consecutive kills by McGraw and Todorovic evened the score at 21. A kill by Aquino tied things up at 22-all, however the Longhorns recorded three of the last four points of the set to take the first 25-23. Kidder paced the Bruins with six kills in the opener, while McGraw and Sage added three apiece. The Bruins were out-hit .407 to .229.

UCLA started off strong to begin the second frame, jumping out to a quick 7-4 lead. Down 3-2, the Bruins received a McGraw kill and a Texas attack error to go ahead 4-3. After a Longhorn sideout, two kills by McGraw with a Texas attack error in between raised the visitors' advantage to 7-4. UCLA would hold on to the lead for the rest of the set. With the score 8-7, the Bruins scored four of five on four Kidder kills to go ahead 12-8. Texas trimmed its deficit to one at 14-13, 15-14 and 16-15, but were unable to get even.

On top 16-15, back-to-back kills by Todorovic made it 18-15. Following a Texas sideout, kills from Todorovic and Kidder and a Longhorn attack error gave the Bruins a set-best lead of five at 21-16. Texas got to within a pair at 21-19 and 22-20, but kills by McGraw and Aquino earned UCLA set point and a Longhorn attack error gave the Bruins a 25-20 triumph. Kidder and McGraw each had seven kills in the second, while Todorovic added three. The Bruins hit a blistering .548 with 20 kills and only three errors in 31 attempts to Texas' .333 hitting percentage.

The Bruins again started strong at the outset of the third set on a serving run by Todorovic, netting the first five points. Following a Todorovic ace and a Kidder kill, UCLA posted its first two blocks of the match, first a combo roof by Sage and Van Orden and then a solo stuff from Kidder. The 5-0 run concluded with a kill by Sage, prompting a Texas timeout. The Longhorns stormed back though with an 11-2 stretch on 4-0 and 7-0 runs to go ahead 11-7. UCLA posted the next three to cut its deficit to 11-10, but Texas responded with a 9-2 run to break it open at 20-12. The Bruins could get no closer than five the rest of the way in losing the third 25-18. Kidder had three kills in the set, as the Bruins were out-hit .267 to .026.

Texas took an early 4-2 lead to open the fourth set, but a kill by Aquino and an Aquino/Todorovic combo block tied it up at four. The Longhorns came back with the next three to go up 7-4, but UCLA equaled that on a Texas attack error and back-to-back kills by Kidder to tie it at 7-all. The score was even again at 8, 10 and 11-all, but a 4-0 Texas run put the home squad up 15-11 at the media timeout. The Longhorns maintained a four-point lead at 19-15 until the Bruins made a charge.

A Kidder kill, a Texas attack error and a Sage kill cut the Bruins' deficit to 19-18. After a Texas sideout, UCLA scored three in a row on back-to-back kills by Sage and one from McGraw to take a 21-20 edge. The Longhorns posted the next two, but a McGraw kill and an Aquino/Van Orden combo block put the Bruins up 23-22. Texas then scored two straight to earn a match point at 24-23. A McGraw kill tied the score at 24, but the Longhorns notched the final two points to post a 26-24 victory. McGraw had seven kills in the fourth, while Kidder and Sage added five apiece. The Bruins were out-hit .306 to .286.
