LOS ANGELES - Senior Samantha Camuso and freshman Ally Carda each drove in a pair of runs, sophomore Kellie Fox added two hits and sophomore Jessica Hall struck out seven in a three-hit, complete-game effort, as the Bruins defeated Kentucky 7-1 on Thursday at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins are ranked 13th by USA Softball and 19th by the NFCA, while the Wildcats are ranked 13th in the NFCA rankings and 18th by USA Softball.
Hall fanned one batter in each of the first three innings, as well as the last two, along with a pair in the fourth. She allowed only an unearned run in the fourth.
The Bruins tallied the first run of the game in the bottom of the first. Senior Katie Schroeder led off with a single up the middle and advanced to second on a passed ball. Fox followed with a single up the middle. Schroeder stopped at third, but when the ball was bobbled by center fielder Emily Jolly, Schroeder continued in to score the initial run of the season.
UCLA added two more in the bottom of the second. Senior Dani Yudin was hit to open the frame and advanced to second on a single to right by freshman Stephany LaRosa. After both runners moved up on a sacrifice by senior Marti Reed, Camuso cashed them in with a double to left to make it 3-0.
The Wildcats got on the board with a run in the fourth. Rachel Riley singled up the middle to start the inning and was pinch-run for by Ginny Carroll, who advanced a pair of bases on successive passed balls. Brittany Cervantes then singled through the left side to plate Carroll and make it 3-1.
Camuso made the defensive play of the game in the top of the fifth. With one out and Macy Allen at first after getting hit, Kara Dill lined one into the 3-4 hole, but Camuso lunged to her left and snared the ball, throwing to first to complete the double play.
The Bruins batted around in the fifth, plating four to break it open. Fox led off with a single to right, and one out later, stole second. Junior B.B. Bates followed with a double to left-center, but Fox had to hold on the play to make sure the ball wasn't caught and only advanced to third. Carda then singled up the middle to bring home Fox and Bates to make it 5-1, as Carda moved to second on a fielding error by Kara Howard in center. Freshman Sam Duran came in to run for Carda, and after a walk to Yudin, freshman Tara Mueller ran for her. Both runners moved into scoring position on a wild pitch and Duran came home on a groundout to second by LaRosa to make it 6-1. Reed then tripled down the left-field line to plate Mueller to put the Bruins up 7-1.
