SAN DIEGO, Calif. - Senior B.B. Bates drove in four runs on a solo homer and a three-run double, while freshman Paige McDuffee tossed a complete-game, three-hitter to improve to 5-0 on the year, as the 10th-ranked Bruins knocked off Fresno State 7-1 on Friday at the San Diego Classic I.
Bates hit a homer for the third straight game, while freshman Allexis Bennett also had a pair of hits, scored three times and stole three bases. The Bruins had seven hits as a team.
McDuffee went seven complete for the second straight game, striking out three and giving up an unearned run and two walks. She had one strikeout in each of the first three innings, and added 1-2-3 frames in the fifth and sixth.
The Bruins got on the board with two outs in their first at-bat, as Bates lifted her 12th homer of the season to straightaway center, more than 230 feet away, to make it 1-0.
In the third, Bennett had a perfect slap double to left with one out and scored when sophomore Gracie Goulder reached on an error by second baseman Whitney Smith to make it 2-0.
In the top of the fourth, Bennett made what has become routine, another diving catch. Leadoff hitter Michelle Solomon looked to find the gap in left-center, but a fully-extended Bennett dove and made the sliding grab to keep the Bulldog off the bases.
UCLA added another in its half of the fourth. Sophomore Ally Carda led off with a pop-fly single to center and freshman Brittany Moeai walked. With sophomore pinch-runner Tara Mueller running for Moeai, both her and Carda moved to third and second on a sacrifice from junior Alyssa Tiumalu. Carda then scored on a passed ball to put the Bruins up 3-0.
In the fifth, Bennett manufactured a run by herself, leading off with a bunt single and then stealing second. One out later, the freshman took off for third, and when catcher Paige Gumz's throw went into left, Bennett came home with UCLA's fourth run.
The Bruins tacked on three more in the sixth. With two outs and Bennett at third after reaching on a fielder's choice and stealing second, and Goulder and LaRosa on base following walks, Bates cleared the bases with a double that landed on the left-field line to increase the advantage to 7-0.
The Bulldogs broke the shutout in the seventh. Vonnie Martin led off with a walk and pinch-runner Bria Kennedy moved to second on a ground out, third on a wild pitch and scored on another grounder.
The Bruins are back at it with two more games on Saturday on the campus of the University of San Diego. UCLA takes on Boise State at 11:30 a.m. and USD at 4:30 p.m. Gametracker will be available at UCLABruins.com, as well as live updates at twitter.com/uclasoftball.
