Cheney Named Honda Award Finalist

LOS ANGELES - The Collegiate Women Sports Awards have recently announced that UCLA women's soccer player Lauren Cheney was named one of four finalists for this year's Honda Award, recognizing the top soccer player in the nation.

Cheney, a sophomore forward from Indianapolis, Ind., led UCLA to its fifth straight NCAA College Cup in 2007. She ended the season ranked second nationally in points per game (2.48) and third nationally in goals per game (1.0). She was recently named a first-team NSCAA/adidas All-American, and is one of three finalists for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy. The 2007 Pac-10 Player of the Year, Cheney led the conference in points (57), goals (23) and game-winning goals (9). She also ranked second overall in assists with 11. Her 57 points and 23 goals on the year were both single-season school

The other candidates are Kristen Olsen (USC), Ashlee Pistorius (Texas A&M) and Mami Yamaguchi (Florida State)

Nominees selected by National Soccer Coaches Association of America

Cheney has also been named a candidate for the Umbro/Soccer News Net Women's College Player of the Year.
