The 14th-ranked Bruins (2-1) travel to Northern California for the SJSU/SMC Tournament this week at San Jose State's Spartan Gym. UCLA opens the tournament against the host Spartans (0-3) on Thursday at 7 p.m. On Friday, the Bruins face Saint Mary's (2-1) at 5 p.m. and close out the weekend against UC Riverside (0-3) on Saturday at 10 a.m. Live stats will be available on the schedule page of UCLABruins.com.

The Bruins play a pair of non-conference matches next week, including their first home contest at Pauley Pavilion against Pepperdine on Wednesday, Sept. 8 at 7 p.m. UCLA then goes on the road to CSU Bakersfield the following evening for a 7 p.m. tilt.

UCLA moved up two spots to 14th in this week's AVCA Top 25 Coaches poll, earning 163 additional points from the preseason rankings. The Bruins moved up three positions from 17th to 14th in the latest Volleyball Magazine poll. UCLA was also selected seventh in the Pac-10 preseason coaches poll, earning 38 points.

All 10 home contests, in addition to road matches at Cal State Northridge and USC, will be broadcast live on UCLABruins.com. Gametracker and/or live stats will also be available for all home matches and most road contests.

The Bruins have started 2-1 in each of the last four seasons. In the previous three years, UCLA followed up the 2-1 start with at least seven straight victories. The Bruins won seven in a row last year, eight straight in 2008 and 11 consecutive in 2007.

The Spartans were swept in all three matches last weekend in Grand Forks, N.D. to North Dakota, Gonzaga and Drake. San Jose State hit .065 as a team, averaging 10.56 kills, 0.33 aces, 16.33 digs and 1.67 blocks per set. Freshman Hanah Blume led the team with 2.43 kps, while junior Sarah McAtee had 2.11 kps. Sophomore Caitlin Andrade handles the setting duties and averaged 7.78 assists per set. Senior Courtney Zellmer is the top defender at 6.11 dps, while sophomore Alex Akana averaged 1.33 bps last weekend. The Spartans return nine letterwinners and five starters from last year's team that went 1-27 and finished ninth in the Western Athletic Conference. Oscar Crespo is in his fourth year as head coach and holds a record of 28-63. The Bruins lead the all-time series against the Spartans 8-1, but the teams haven't played since 1986, when San Jose State swept UCLA in a best 2-of-3 tournament format in Davis, Calif. Prior to that, the Bruins had won 22 of 24 sets in their eight-match winning streak. UCLA is 2-0 all-time at San Jose State.

The Gaels, who were ranked 25th in the AVCA preseason poll, fell out of the rankings after a 2-1 weekend in Long Beach. After sweeping UNLV and beating Sacred Heart in four, Saint Mary's lost to Long Beach State in five. The Gaels hit .248 as a team, averaging 14.08 kills, 0.92 aces, 16.92 digs and 2.62 blocks per set. Four players averaged over two kps last weekend, led by senior Megan York, who posted 3.50 kps and 4.00 dps. Sophomore Lauren Corp had 3.25 kps and 3.17 dps, senior Shannon Lowell added 2.92 kps and a team-best 1.58 bps and sophomore Gabby Jolly recorded 2.25 kps and 1.00 bps. The Gaels employ two setters, sophomore Missy White (5.75 assists per set) and senior Kapua Kamana'o (5.17 aps). Saint Mary's went 23-5 a year ago and won the West Coast Conference title. The Gaels return four starters and eight letterwinners from a team that advanced to the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Rob Browning is in his sixth year as head coach and holds a record of 90-51. The Bruins won the only meeting against the Gaels, a three-set sweep at Saint Mary's on Nov. 11, 2001.

The Highlanders lost all three matches during their opening weekend in Fresno, getting swept by Fresno State and Oregon, while losing to Santa Clara in five. UC Riverside hit .132 as a team, averaging 9.91 kills, 1.18 aces, 11.82 digs and 2.23 blocks per set. Senior Kelly Simpson led the way with a team-best 3.00 kps and 2.91 dps. The Highlanders use two setters in sophomore Courtney Wypiszynski (7.33 assists per set) and junior Katie Meyers (7.17 aps). Sophomore Bianca Endersby had a team-best 1.00 bps last weekend. UC Riverside brings back two starters and seven letterwinners from a 2009 team that went 6-21 and finished ninth in the Big West Conference. Ron Larsen is in his second year as the Highlanders' head coach. The Bruins are a perfect 10-0 against the Highlanders, with the teams last meeting coming on Sept. 3, 2008 in Riverside. UCLA claimed a straight-set victory, 25-16, 25-19, 25-16. Katie Camp posted 12 kills, while Lainey Gera had 12 digs. This will be the second time in three years that the two teams have met after having not played each other previously since 1986. UCLA has not dropped a set against UC Riverside and are 7-0 in neutral-site contests.

The 2010 Bruins have no shortage of players who have followed in the tradition of their mothers or sisters in playing for the UCLA women's volleyball program. Freshman Kelly Reeves begins her journey at UCLA after her mother, Jeanne (Beauprey) Reeves, was a four-year letterwinner from 1979-82. Jeanne was an All-American in 1982, ranks 14th on the Bruins' all-time kills list and was an assistant on the 1990 and 1991 UCLA National Championship teams. Freshman Madie Smith will join her two older sisters as members of the UCLA women's volleyball team. Morgan Smith played with the Bruins from 2002-03 and Jordan played from 2005-06. The Bruin bloodlines also translate to the men's side, as freshman Angelica Chaghouri's brother Eric was a three-year letterwinner on the UCLA men's volleyball squad. Freshman Jenna Scilacci also has two brothers, James and Brian, who have played on the men's team.
