Release:  12/11/2012

Dec. 11, 2012

Several Bruins earned recognition as the Associated Press and SportsIllustrated.com (si.com) released their All-America teams on Tuesday. Senior running back Johnathan Franklin and junior linebacker Anthony Barr were each selected to the second-team of both entities. Sophomore guard Xavier Su'a-Filo was a third-team selection by the Associated Press and an honorable mention pick by si.com. The Sports Illustrated honorable mention squad also included senior punter Jeff Locke.

Franklin, a finalist for the Doak Walker Award, became UCLA's all-time leader in all-purpose yardage during the Pac-12 Championship game. He also set a new mark for single-season rushing during the contest at Stanford and now has 1,700 yards on the year. Earlier this season, he became the all-time rushing leader at the school and currently has 4,369 yards.

Barr, who is playing his first season on the defensive side of the ball after two as a running back, recorded 1.5 sacks in the Championship game and moved into the national lead with 13.5 sacks. That total is second on the all-time school list for a season behind Dave Ball's total of 16.5, set in 2003.

Su'a-Filo, who returned to the team following a two-year Church mission, has been opening holes for Franklin and protecting quarterback Brett Hundley well all season.

Locke leads the Pac-12 with 31 punts placed inside the twenty-yard line this season, including 20 at or inside the 10-yard line.

In other news, Collegefootballnews.com released its Freshman All-American teams earlier in the week. Center Jake Brendel was named to the second-team. Quarterback Hundley and offensive tackles, Simon Goines and Torian White each received honorable mention.

In addition, Franklin, Su'a-Filo, Locke and Barr were each named to Phil Steele's 2012 Postseason All-Pac-12 first-team. Senior guard Jeff Baca, sophomore linebacker Eric Kendricks and senior defensive lineman Datone Jones were listed on the second-team. Third-team selections included junior wide receiver Shaquelle Evans, junior kick returner Damien Thigpen and freshman punt returner Steven Manfro.
