The UCLA women's volleyball team presented 11 team awards at its annual season-ending banquet on January 22. NCAA Tournament participation medallions were distributed to the team, as were commemorative t-shirts honoring the 1,000th career victory for Bruin head coach Andy Banachowski.
That milestone win took place on November 12 in Pauley Pavilion, a dramatic five-game triumph over previously undefeated and eventual NCAA Champion Washington, a match that would prove to be the only loss of the season for the Huskies.
Team awards were presented as follows:
Highest in-season GPA: Jade Machado
Best Conditioned Athlete: Katie Carter
Best Server: Blair Socci
Best Passer: Jordan Smith
Best Setter: Nellie Spicer
Best Hitter: Nana Meriwether
Best Digger: Jordan Smith
Best Blocker: Nana Meriwether
Best Newcomer: Nellie Spicer
Most Improved: Rachell Johnson
Team MVP: Nana Meriwether
The Bruins finished with a record of 20-11 and were one of three Pac-10 teams to reach the Sweet Sixteen. UCLA played top-seeded Nebraska in the NCAA Regional Final, falling in three games in front of a then-NCAA record crowd of 14,489 at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.
