NCAA Restores Eligibility of Kristee Porter

Release:  11/21/2001

Nov. 21, 2001

UCLA senior volleyball All-American Kristee Porter has had her eligibility restored by the NCAA Student-Athlete Reinstatement Staff, UCLA announced today.

On Oct. 19, UCLA suspended Porter while it investigated the possibility that Porter had accepted what would be considered by the NCAA as "extra benefits." Porter had come forward with the information when she realized there could be a problem. On the date it suspended her, UCLA forwarded a report to the NCAA which included the facts of the case and a request that Porter's eligibility be restored.

Subsequent to the submission of that report, UCLA became aware of new information regarding Porter's situation. UCLA has spent the last few weeks gathering and analyzing that information, and yesterday submitted supplemental information to the NCAA.

Earlier today, the NCAA informed UCLA that Porter would be penalized 50% of this volleyball season and would have to make restitution of an amount equal to the "extra benefits" she received. Since Porter has already missed 13 UCLA volleyball matches, half of the season, she is immediately eligible to compete. A schedule for repayment must be approved by the NCAA prior to Porter's participation.

The UCLA women's volleyball team has concluded the regular season. The NCAA Division I women's volleyball championship field will be announced next Monday and the Bruins expect to be among the 64 teams selected.

Porter is eligible to participate in basketball and track and field and is planning to participate in both sports during the 2001-02 year.
