April 8, 2004

Box Score

Four Bruin runs scored in the top of the ninth inning as UCLA (17-13) rallied from a one-run deficit to post a 9-7 win over Arizona (15-14-1) in front of 878 fans at Kindall Field at Sancet Stadium.

UCLA sent nine batters to the plate in the ninth inning a single from Mike Svetlic started the frame and he would move over on wild pitch. Matt Thayer singled to drive in Svetlic and even the score at 6-6.. Ryan McCarthy sacrificed Thayer to second and Brett McMillan was hit by a pitch before Preston Griffin walked to load the bases. Wes Whisler would bring the winning run across home plate and drive in another with a two-RBI single. Another Bruin run would score on a double down the left field line by Josh Roenicke.

Arizona posted a run in the bottom of the inning, but it would not be enough to overtake the Bruins.

The Bruins jumped ahead early in the contest, scoring three runs in the first frame. Four consecutive singles from Svetlic, Thayer, Ryan McCarthy and McMillan would highlight the inning. After one inning, UCLA led 3-0.

Another UCLA run would score in the third inning as Thayer led off the frame with a single through the left side. McMillan would single to give the Bruins runners at second and third before Wes Whisler drove Thayer home on a single. The Bruins led 4-0 after three innings.

Arizona rallied in the fourth inning to mark the first of four straight innings in which the Wildcats scored. Two runs crossed home plate in the fourth on a two-run homer from Jordan Brown.

A Wildcat run would score in each of the next two frames as Arizona evened the score at 4-4.

The Bruins reclaimed the lead in the seventh when Thayer's one-out triple put a runner in scoring position. McMillan would bring the runner home with his seventh sacrifice fly of the season.

Jordan Brown would bring in two more runs and give the Wildcats a 6-5 advantage in the bottom of the inning with his second home run of the night.

Thayer finished the night with a career-high tying four hits, while Whisler knocked in three runs.

The Wildcats and Bruins will face-off in the second game of the three-game series tomorrow night. Right-hander Casey Janssen (5-2) will take the mound for the 7:00 p.m. start.
