LOS ANGELES - Craig Smith scored 20 points and Boston College was able to maintain the lead without its foul-plagued star, defeating UCLA 74-64 Sunday in the Wooden Classic.

The Eagles (5-0) used a 13-0 run early in the second half to take the lead for good. Smith was forced to sit after picking up his fourth foul with about 8 minutes remaining. The Eagles' lead dwindled to two points after he left, but they built it back up with nine straight points.

Freshman Jordan Farmar had 14 points for the Bruins (4-1), who failed their first major test of the season despite leading by 13 points in the first half. Smith's bulk proved too daunting in the post for the likes of UCLA 7-footers Michael Fey and Ryan Hollins, who was replaced in the starting lineup by Matt McKinney.

Fey had five points and four rebounds in 17 minutes; Hollins had two points and one rebound in 26 minutes. McKinney played just 10 minutes, with no points and four rebounds. Freshman Josh Shipp added 13 points and Dijon Thompson had 12 points for UCLA.

Smith scored the Eagles' first six points of the second half, helping to erase a nine-point deficit. A three-point play by Jermaine Watson tied the game at 43 before Steve Hailey's basket put the Eagles ahead to stay.

Boston College didn't need Smith down the stretch. Nate Doornekamp stole the ball from Farmar, scored and was fouled by Farmar for a three-point play to give the Eagles a 66-55 lead.

Smith and teammates Sean Marshall and Jared Dudley were playing in front of several friends and family. Smith attended Fairfax High in Los Angeles; Marshall is from the Los Angeles suburb of Rialto; and Dudley is from suburban San Diego. None was recruited by UCLA or Southern California.

Dudley grabbed 10 rebounds to help Boston College dominate the boards, 41-33. Hailey and Marshall each had 13 points and Watson added 11.

The teams combined for 43 turnovers, six by Thompson.

The Eagles made their first appearance in the Wooden Classic. UCLA is 5-3 in the event.

UCLA leads the series 3-1. The teams were playing for the first time since 1978.
