UCLA Head Coach Steve Lavin
In his seventh season as Bruin head coach with a school and career mark of 137-63 (200 games, 68.5) and 12th year on the UCLA staff (358 games, 263-95, 73.5). The Kansas contest was Lavin's 200 th game as the Bruin head coach.

The 2001 Pac-10 Coach of the Year, Lavin and Duke's Mike Krzyzewski are the only current coaches who have guided their teams to five NCAA "Sweet 16s" in the last six seasons.

Lavin entered 2002-03 as the 15 th winningest active coach (minimum five years as a Div. I head coach/based on percentage-69.6, 135-59 entering this season). In his Bruin head coaching career, Lavin is 1-0 vs. Michigan. On March 15, 1998 in the second round of the NCAA Tournament in Atlanta (South Region), No. 19 UCLA defeated No. 12 Michigan 85-82.

Michigan Head Coach Tommy Amaker
The former Duke standout and assistant coach is in his second season as the head coach at Michigan (last year, the Wolverines were 11-18). Before taking the Michigan job, Amaker was the head coach at Seton Hall (1998-01, 68-55). He was an assistant at Duke from 1989-97 and as a Blue Devil player (1984-87), Amaker was one of the nation's top defensive college performers

UCLA's Last Game
at No. 19 Kansas 87, UCLA 70
Before 16,300 at Allen Fieldhouse in Lawrence, KS on Dec 21, Kansas jumped out to a 48-25 halftime lead, withstood a late UCLA rally and defeated the Bruins 87-70.

With 4:09 left to play, the Bruins cut the KU lead to 11 points (75-64) on a layup by Andre Patterson. But in the final four minutes, KU outscored the Bruins 12-3. UCLA did outscore the Jayhawks in the second half (45-39).

UCLA had three players in double figures - led by Dijon Thompson's 21 points off the bench, with five rebounds and assists and four steals; Jason Kapono's first season double-double (13 points and a career-high tying 13 rebounds) and in his first career start, 12 points from Patterson.

The Bruins shot 38.7 (season-low, 29-57) from the field, 33.3 (7-21) from three-point range and 83.3 (season-high, 5-6) from the foul line, with a game-high 45 rebounds and a game-high 15 turnovers.

KU shot 51.7 (30-58) from the field, 44.4 (8-18) from three-point range and 67.9 (19-28) from the foul line, with 36 rebounds and 11 turnovers. The Jayhawks were led by Kirk Hinrich's 27 points.

UCLA-Michigan Series
Michigan recently forfeited its 86-84 OT 1993 NCAA second round victory over UCLA, so the Bruins lead the series 8-0 (an actual 7-1 UCLA on-the-court advantage). Michigan is 0-4 in Pauley. The Bruins defeated Michigan 91-80 to win the 1965 NCAA title (the Bruins' second NCAA championship).

Looking Ahead
The Bruins open 2003 Pac-10 play on Thursday, Jan. 2 at Washington ( 7 p.m.) and Saturday, Jan. 4 at Washington State (4 p.m.).

The Wolverines
After dropping its first six games, Michigan has now won four contests in a row, last beating Eastern Michigan 85-57 on Dec. 23 in Ann Arbor.
