Bruins Head to Malibu This Friday
The No. 3 UCLA women's soccer team (8-1-1) rounds out the non-conference part of its 2009 schedule this Friday, as the Bruins head to Malibu to take on Pepperdine (6-3) at 3:00 p.m. UCLA takes a 12-match unbeaten streak against Pepperdine into Friday's contest, as the Bruins lead the all-time series 11-2-1. Winning Streak Moves to Eight With CSUN, UCSB Victories
UCLA upped its winning streak to eight in a row last week, as the Bruins posted a pair of non-conference victories over Cal State Northridge and UC Santa Barbara. Kristina Larsen and Lauren Cheney were the goal scorers on Friday, as the Bruins notched a 2-0 win at Northridge. Sydney Leroux was the story on Sunday, as she notched her team-leading ninth and 10th goals of the year in a 3-1 Bruin win at UC Santa Barbara. Redshirt junior Jenna Belcher also scored her first career goal in that match.

Leroux Ranks Third Nationally in Goals
Forward Sydney Leroux ranks tied for third in the nation in goals, as the Bruin sophomore has already notched 10 in the nine matches that she has appeared in this year. Leroux leads the Bruins in scoring with 21 points (10g, 1a).

Lang Sidelined
UCLA redshirt senior women's soccer player Kara Lang suffered a season-ending knee injury in the Bruins' match at Cal State Northridge last Friday. The injury, which occurred in the 21st minute of UCLA's 2-0 win, is a re-tear of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in her right knee. Lang suffered a similar injury prior to her sophomore year at UCLA and was forced to redshirt the entire 2006 season. "I feel extremely sorry for Kara to have suffered this type of injury during her senior year," said UCLA head coach Jillian Ellis. "She is a vital part of this program and I know she will continue to be with us and support this team in some capacity the rest of the season. Kara is a strong individual, and I have full confidence that she will rebound from this injury and continue to have a successful soccer career." Lang had started all nine of UCLA's matches prior to her injury. She currently ranks fourth on the team in scoring with seven points (3g, 1a).

Bruins Ranked No. 3/4 Nationally
UCLA remained the same in the NSCAA/adidas Coaches' Poll released on Tuesday, checking in at No. 3 for the second week in a row. The Bruins moved up a spot this week from No. 5 to No. 4 in Soccer America's weekly rankings. UCLA is also ranked No. 3 by Soccer Times. The NSCAA rankings can be found HERE.

Newcomers Playing a Big Role
UCLA started five newcomers, four of them freshmen, in its 3-1 victory over UC Santa Barbara last Sunday. Freshmen Zakiya Bywaters, Chelsea Cline, Lucretia Lee and Ahsha Smith joined sophomore transfer Chante Sandiford in the starting lineup. Freshman Sophie Metz and junior transfer Iman Bearde also played in the match as substitutes.

Belcher Emerges
After appearing in just seven matches in her first two years at UCLA, redshirt junior Jenna Belcher is enjoying a breakout season in 2009. Belcher, who transferred from Santa Clara following her freshman season, has started all 10 matches this year. As a defender, she has been instrumental in helping the Bruins' to five shutouts this year. UCLA has also allowed just three goals during the current eight-match winning streak. Belcher has helped out offensively as well, registering five points on a goal and three assists.
