Volleyball Falls to Stanford in Four

Final Stats

STANFORD, Calif. - Fifth-ranked UCLA dropped its third match of the 2006 season on Saturday night at No. 2 Stanford, falling 17-30, 30-25, 30-26, 30-27 to the Cardinal at Maples Pavilion in a Dig for the Cure match. The Bruins fall to 25-3 (12-3 Pac-10) with the loss and are now tied with USC for third place in the Pac-10 standings.

The Bruins were hot in the opening game of the match, hitting .464 as a team with 14 kills on 28 attacks with just one error.

Unfortunately, UCLA's pinpoint offensive accuracy did not transfer to the remainder of the match. The Bruins had an equal numbers of kills and errors in game two and went on to hit .104 in game three and .157 in game four for a .144 attack percentage as a team in the match. Stanford hit just .165 as a team in the match.

UCLA was led by Nana Meriwether who had 17 kills and 13 blocks (1 solo, 12 assists) in the match with a .361 individual attack percentage. Rachell Johnson also finished with double-figure kills, finishing with 12 in the match to go along with all four of the team's service aces. The Bruins had four players with double-figure digs, led by sophomore libero Jordan Smith with 23.

UCLA out-blocked the Cardinal 17.5-14 and out-dug them 85-79.

The Bruins return to action on Friday night, Nov. 17, with a 7 pm Lexus Gauntlet match against No. 6 USC in Pauley Pavilion. The Bruins will play their final four regular season matches in Pauley, with the Nov. 17 USC match, a Nov. 20 contest against Pepperdine and Thanksgiving weekend matches against Oregon State and Oregon Nov. 24 and 25, respectively.
