Three Bruins Earn NSCAA/adidas All-America Honors

Dec. 9, 2008

LOS ANGELES - UCLA women's soccer players Lauren Cheney, Christina DiMartino and Erin Hardy were all named to NSCAA/adidas All-America teams on Tuesday for their efforts during the 2008 season. Cheney and DiMartino were first-team selections, while Hardy earned second-team honors.

Cheney, a junior forward from Indianapolis, led the team in scoring for third straight season, finishing this year with 31 points on 11 goals and nine assists. She also led the Bruins with six game-winning goals. She becomes the first player in UCLA history to earn three first-team All-America honors. She is one of 15 semifinalists for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Player of the Year Award.

DiMartino, a senior midfielder from Massapequa, NY, ended the season with 18 points on six goals and six assists. She had two game-winning goals on the season, one of which came in a 1-0 victory over No. 2 Stanford during the regular season. DiMartino is now a three-time All-American after being named to the first team in 2006 and the second team last year. She ends her career ranked in the top 10 at UCLA in career scoring with 74 points (17g, 30a). Her 30 assists is good enough for second place all time at UCLA. Like Cheney, she is one of 15 semifinalists for the M.A.C. Hermann Trophy Player of the Year Award.

Hardy, a senior defender from Costa Mesa, Calif., was the leader of a UCLA defense that surrendered just six goals in 25 matches this season. The Bruins ranked No. 1 nationally in goals against average (0.23) and shutout percentage (0.76). UCLA's 19 shutouts on the season led the country. It marks the first NSCAA/adidas All-America for Hardy.

NSCAA/adidas All-West Region honors were also recently announced and, in addition to the above three players, Ashley Thompson (first team) and McCall Zerboni (third team) were recognized.

UCLA recently reached its sixth straight NCAA College Cup, falling to eventual champion North Carolina, 1-0 in the semifinals last Friday evening in Cary, NC. The Bruins ended the season with a 22-1-2 overall record and a No. 3 national ranking.
