Bruins Fall to Maryland, 2-1

Sept. 12, 2004

CHARLOTTESVILLE - Despite outshooting its opponent 17-7, the third-ranked UCLA women's soccer team came up just shot against Maryland on Sunday, falling 2-1 at the University of Virginia Nike Classic. With the loss, the Bruins move to 3-2 overall. Maryland improves to 3-1-1.

The Terps used an opportunistic offensive attack and a tenacious defensive effort to record its first win over a ranked opponent since last November when the Terps defeated No. 23 Clemson 2-1 on November 5. It was Maryland's first win over a top 10 team since October 13, 2001, when the Terps beat Clemson 1-0 in overtime.

Freshman Kelly Rozumalski got Maryland on the scoreboard just under seven minutes into the match on a breakaway goal off a through-ball from freshman Carissa Gilbert.

The Terps would take a 2-0 lead with five minutes remaining in the first half when junior Mallory Mahar found junior Kimmy Francis on a breakaway for Francis' second goal of the tournament.

UCLA pressured the Maryland defense all afternoon, but Terp goalkeeper Nikki Resnick was up to the challenge stopping eight of nine shots on goal. In total the Bruins out-shot Maryland 17-7.

UCLA managed to trim the lead to 2-1 on a goal by Danesha Adams, her sixth goal on the season, in the 64th minute.

Kendal Billingsley, Jill Oakes and Caitlin Ursini were named to the all-tournament team.
