No.2 UCLA Downs No. 9 Hawaii 12-5

Feb. 22, 2003

The Bruins rebounded from yesterday's loss to USC to defeat the Rainbow Wahine in convincing fashion. After taking a 2-1 lead at the end of the first quarter, the UCLA offense came alive and scored four goals in the second quarter to take a 6-2 lead going into the half. In the third and fourth quarters the Bruins wouldn't allow the Rainbow Wahine to get any closer, outscoring Hawaii 6-3 to finish the game with a 12-5 victory.

Junior Ashley Stachowski got the Bruins going early in the first quarter scoring on UCLA's first possession. After a Natalie Golda goal with 2:18 remaining made it 2-0 Bruins, Hawaii was able to answer back before the quarter ended. A Jessica Lopez goal with 4:48 in the second quarter made it 3-1 and although the Rainbow Wahine were again able to get within one at 3-2, from then on out it was all UCLA. Two goals from Katie Flanagan and one from Kelly Rulon made it 6-2 UCLA at the end of the second quarter. Another Stachowski goal early in the third quarter made it 7-2 UCLA. Maureen Flanagan then scored with 5:39 remaining to make it 8-2. Though Hawaii would score to make it 8-3, the Bruins answered back with a goal from Mari Joyce. Hawaii made it 4-9 with just seconds remaining in the third quarter. The Bruins continued to score in the fourth with goals from Golda, Rulon and Katherine Belden while holding Hawaii to only one goal in the final quarter to take the 12-5 victory.

Ashley Stachowski, Natalie Golda Kelly Rulon and Katie Flanagan each scored twice for the Bruins. Jessica Lopez, Mari Joyce, Katherine Belden and Maureen Flanagan all scored once. For the Rainbow Wahine, Karin van Hoff had two goals and Kristy Bagnall, Tracy Anderson and Erin Kocher each had one goal. Bruin goalkeeper Jaime Hipp had eight saves. Hawaii goalkeeper Amber Lumb also had eight saves.

Next weekend the Bruins will travel north for MPSF games against No. 1 Stanford on Friday, February 28 and San Jose State on Saturday, March 1. UCLA's next home game will be Thursday March 13 versus Loyola Marymount at 3:00 PM.
