INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. - UCLA senior Beth Goodwin and junior Nicole Beck started USA Swimming's Olympic Trials with a bang on Wednesday, posting lifetime best times and advancing to the semifinal round of the 100 meter Butterfly.

Goodwin, the top-ranked Bruin entering the event, finished third in her heat with a lifetime best time of 1:00.71, and was in the lane next to Darrah Torres, who set a new American record in the preliminaries. Goodwin was ranked 11th going into the semifinal round.

Beck also posted a lifetime best to win her heat, and her time of 1:01.35 was good enough to rank her 16th and give her a spot in Wednesday night's semifinal round.

In the semifinal round, Goodwin turned in a 1:01.44, while Beck posted a 1:02.50 to finish 12th and 14th, respectively.

In Thursday's preliminaries, UCLA student-athletes competed in all three events, with Beck placing 20th in the 100 Back (1:04.80), sophomore Erin Zehntner finishing 29th in the 400 Free with a time of 4:19.92, and junior Lyndee Hovsepian competing in the 100 Breast. None of the three were able to advance to the semifinal rounds.
