Final Stats

DENVER - The third-ranked UCLA women's volleyball team posted its seventh straight victory to open the 2006 season on Friday night at the Pioneer Classic, defeating Texas State in four games with individual game scores of 30-24, 31-29, 28-30, 30-17. Nana Meriwether continued her hot streak at the net, downing 22 kills on an error-free 29 attacks for a .759 attack percentage in the match. She added four block assists for a team-high 24 points in the contest.

UCLA won an error-riddled opening game, where neither team topped a .105 attack percentage. Kaitlin Sather led the Bruins in that opening game with six kills and a .364 attack percentage. Both teams had their block working as Texas State had six blocks in the opening game to UCLA's three.

In game two, Meriwether downed eight kills on a .667 attack percentage after sitting out the opening game of the match. That kill total led the Bruins and she was the only UCLA player other than libero Jordan Smith who did not record an error in the game. The Bobcats hit .265 to UCLA's .143 in the game. Texas State had game point at 29-28 before a pair of Kaitlin Sather kills and a Jordan Smith ace gave the Bruins the 31-29 win.

After playing just eight players in game one and seven in a sub-free second game, UCLA head coach Andy Banachowski put 11 players into the third game. UCLA's team attack percentage continued to improve, going to .231 in game three, but Texas State responded as well, recording just four errors and hitting .314 in a 30-28 win.

UCLA responded in game four, going back to a short bench as Meriwether had a perfect performance, downing 10 kills on as many swings to help UCLA to a .529 team attack percentage. Five kills apiece from Rachell Johnson and Katie Carter, along with two from Ali Daley, gave the Bruins 22 kills on 34 attacks with just four errors as a team in the final game.

UCLA returns to action on Saturday at the Pioneer Classic with matches against Georgia and host Denver.
