No. 13 UCLA Women's Soccer Tops Cal Poly, SLO 5-1

Sept. 22, 1999

WESTWOOD, Calif. - The No. 13 UCLA women's soccer team defeated the Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo Mustangs 5-1 tonight at UCLA's Spaulding Field.

The Mustangs struck first with a goal from senior midfielder Kara Grondzik. The 11th minute goal was enough to fire up the Bruins, who went on a 5-0 scoring run and did not look back. Junior forward Tracey Milburn led the Bruins with two goals, including the game-winner.

With 10:26 on the clock, Grondzik stole the ball from senior defender Skylar Little and fired in a shot from 15 yards out. Freshman forward Jessica Winton tied up the score in the 25th minute when she blasted in a shot from 10 yards out that went across the goal and hit the right corner of the net. Less than three minutes later, Milburn notched the game-winner when she headed in the ball off an assist from sophomore defender Bethany Bogart.

Milburn struck again just seconds after the half, diving in a header off a cross from sophomore midfielder Breana Boling. Sophomore forward Staci Duncan scored an insurance goal in the 57th minute of play when she shot goalkeeper Lauren Stevenson's deflected save from eight yards out. Rounding off the scoring for the Bruins, sophomore Courteney Cosso recorded her first collegiate goal when she tapped in the ball from the top left of the penalty box.

Stevenson recorded 10 saves for the Mustangs, while UCLA goalkeepers Lindsay Culp and CiCi Peterson grabbed two and one, respectively. The Bruin defense allowed only seven shots, while UCLA recorded 21.

UCLA's record improves to 6-1-0 and the Mustangs drop to 2-5-0.

The Bruins will be in action again on Sunday, September 26, when they travel to San Diego to battle the San Diego State Aztecs (5-2-0) at 1 pm. UCLA leads the overall series against San Diego State 4-1-1. Last year, the Aztecs defeated the Bruins 1-0.
