Women's soccer midfielder Sam Mewis was named the UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week for Aug. 18-24.
Mewis led the top-ranked Bruins to a 2-0 start to the 2014 season, scoring a goal in each game and adding an assist in the UC Irvine game. She was an offensive force in both games, taking seven shots, four on goal, against Maryland, and six shots, three on goal, against UCI. Mewis' goal against Maryland in the season opener gave UCLA a 2-0 lead. Less than a minute after the Bruins went ahead 1-0, she made a long run down the field and shot past the Terrapin goalkeeper. Against UCI, Mewis gave UCLA some breathing room with a 78th minute goal that increased the Bruins’ lead to 2-0, and she helped make it 3-0 when her header off the crossbar in the 84th minute bounced down and straight to Darian Jenkins, who one-timed it into the back of the net for a goal. Mewis, who leads the Bruins in scoring with two goals, one assist and five points, was also named to Top Drawer Soccer's National Team of the Week.
This is Mewis' first UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week honor of the season and of her career.
