A third-place finish for junior decathlete Marcus Nilsson (8,104 pts.) and a seventh-place finish by junior hammer thrower Alec Faldermeyer led the charge for UCLA Thursday at Day Two of the 2013 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships, hosted by the University of Oregon.

Faldermeyer, who finished a career-best third at the 2012 outdoor championships, ended up seventh overall on Thursday, earning the UCLA men their first two points of this year's competition. Participating in flight one, his fourth throw measured 65.18m (213-10), and was the one that ensured that he returns to Westwood with his third consecutive first-team All America honors.

Nilsson, entering the second day of the decathlon in ninth place (4,023 points), was looking to improve on his career best of 7,823 points, earned at the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships. And he did just that. His Thursday began with an 18th place finish (overall) in the 110mH (14.74, +1.8w, 881 points). In the next event, the discus, he unleashed the third-best throw in the competition - 48.19m (158-1), 833 points. His best pole vault was an effort of 4.80m (15-9), which was enough for 849 points. In the next event, the javelin, Nilsson gained 737 points for his mark of 59.97m/196-9, which placed fourth overall. Finally, in the last stage of the combined event, the 1,500m, the Swede ran a 4:24.46 to finish fourth in the event, and third overall in the competition. This marks the best NCAA finish in his three-year career, improving upon his fifth place effort in 2012. The junior now holds the No. 3 score all-time in school history.

Dominic Giovannoni also added a personal-best performance Thursday for the Bruin men, coming in 13th place in the men's decathlon (7,726 points). The Napa, Calif. native was 12th in the standings after Day One with 3,993 points, and, like teammate Nilsson, was gunning to top his personal-best 7,634 points, obtained at the 2013 Pac-12 Championships. He began the day with a 14.45 (+1.1w, 917 points) in 100mH, good enough for fourth overall. His best throw in the discus was 38.99m (127-11), enough for 644 points. In the pole vault, Giovannoni cleared 5.00m (16-4¾), and earned 910 points. He followed that up with a throw of 49.70m/163-1 in the javelin, adding another 584 points to his overall point total. The senior rounded out the day with a solid performance in the 1,500m run, adding 678 points to his score (4:40.33).

Meanwhile, sophomore hurdler Brea Buchanan failed to clear the final hurdle and fell just before the finish line, eliminating her from the women's 100mH competition. Buchanan had previously posted a lifetime-best 12.77 in a second place finish at the 2013 Pac-12 Championships, a mark that is No. 2 all-time in UCLA history.

Junior Tatum Souza's appearance in the heptathlon concluded the Bruins' competition on Thursday. Souza, who set her personal-best (5,624 pts.) at the 2013 Pac-12 Championships (No. 7 all-time in UCLA history), is in tenth place overall (3,414 points) entering the final three events of the combined event on Friday.

Souza began the day with a 13.86 (+2.7w) and 998 points in the in the heptathlon's 100mH. In the competition's second discipline, the high jump, Souza had a mark of 1.69m (5-6½), which gave her 842 points. In the shot put, she achieved a mark of 12.76m (41-10.5) 711 points. She ended the first day with a 25.26 (+2.8w) in the 200m, earning 863 points.

The 2013 outdoor championships mark her second NCAA appearance, but her first in the heptathlon. In 2012, she received an All-America honorable mention for her 21st place finish in the women's 4x400m relay.

Competing on Friday

On Friday, Julian Wruck, the 2011 NCAA men's discus champion while attending Texas Tech, looks to cap off an amazing season in the discus. In 2013 alone, he has achieved the top mark in the world in 2013 (it is now fourth), the top mark in UCLA history, and most importantly, a throw that is the all-time top collegiate mark in the men's discus.

He first became the school's all-time leader in March, throwing 65.04m/213-5 in a victory at the Texas State Elite Meet. Since then, Wruck has topped his own mark several times, culminating in his performance at the Claremont Hammer and Discus Elite Invitational, where he became the all-time collegiate record holder in the men's discus throw with a mark of 68.16m/223-7.

Meanwhile, Souza will wrap her participation up the heptathlon, as the final three events are contested (long jump, javelin and 800m).

On the track, senior Turquoise Thompson looks to take home the women's 400mH title after placing second in that event in both 2011 and 2012, earning two-time All-America honors. She ran the fourth-best time (56.60, +2.7w) in Wednesday semifinals and her personal-best 55.18 is No. 6 all-time in UCLA history.
