MYSLOWICE, Poland - The U.S. beach volleyball team of UCLA junior Meg Norton and Hawai'i's Brittany Tiegs advanced through to the main draw at the FIVB Beach Volleyball U23 World Championships, which began on Wednesday.
Norton and Tiegs had a bye through the first round of qualifications after being seeded first. In round two, they defeated Ukraine's Olena Basanova and Valentyna Hrytsyuk, 19-21, 21-19, 15-12, to earn one of four available spots in the main draw.
The main draw pool play began on Thursday, with Norton and Tiegs seeded No. 23 and playing in Pool G. Norton and Tiegs fell in each of their first two matches of pool play to 10th-seeded Paula Soria Gutierrez and Raquel Brun Forcadell of Spain (21-16, 25-23) and #7-seed Rimke Braakman and Jolien Sinnema of the Netherlands (21-16, 21-14).
The finale of Pool G for Norton and Tiegs was on Friday, as the duo forced a third set, but fell 21-23, 21-13, 10-15 to #26-seed Ilze Liepinlauska and Sandra Ragozina of Latvia.
