Tatum Souza led the way for the Bruins Saturday at Day 1 of the Pac-12 Multi-Event Championships at Katherine B. Loker Stadium, finishing the first day of action in second place in the women's heptathlon (3,385 points). Both Souza and fellow Napa-native Dominic Giovannoni had tremendous starts to the conference championships, each recording several personal bests.

Souza's strong day included a tie for first place in the high jump with a personal-best jump 1.69m/5-6.5 while adding second place performances in the 100m hurdles (13.95; personal-best) and shot put (12.42m/40-9). She rounded out her day with a third place finish in the 200m dash (25.20; personal best).

Fellow Bruin Kimmie Conner finished the first day of competition in fifth place (3,096 points), highlighted by top-five finishes in the 100m hurdles (5th, 14.15), high jump (3rd, 1.66m/5-5.25; personal best) and 200m dash (5th, 25.97).

In the decathlon, Dominic Giovannoni and Marcus Nilsson both started off the day with personal-bests in the 100m dash, with Dominic taking fourth overall (11.07) and Marcus taking eighth (11.24). Next, the decathlon moved to the field for the long jump. Giovannoni and Nilsson finished fourth (6.91m/22-9) and fifth (6.75m/22-1.75), respectively.

Third, the decathletes competed in the shot put. Giovannoni, a senior from Napa, claimed the event victory with a winning throw of 13.82m/45-4.25 to pick up 717 points toward his overall score. Nilsson took ninth (12.48m/40-11.5).

The men stayed on field for the fourth event of the day, the high jump. For the second time today, Giovannoni recorded a personal best, clearing 2.00m/6-6.75 to take fourth place.

Finally, combined athletes closed the first day of competition with the men's 400m dash. The Napa-native Giovannoni would set a personal best for the third time Saturday, running 49.57 to a third place finish (first in Section 1).

After Day 1 at the Pac-12 Multi-Event Championships, Dominic Giovannoni sits in fourth place in the men's decathlon (3,992 points) and Marcus Nilsson is currently eighth (3,650 points).
