Pullman, Wash. - Sophomore Shane Zeile hit a RBI single in the top of the 11th inning to lift the ninth-ranked UCLA Baseball team to a 7-6 victory over Washington State in extra innings on Friday night. Sophomore David Berg earned the win in relief to move to 5-0 on the year.

Berg tossed 3.2 innings for the Bruins, giving up four hits while striking out four. Jason Monda took the loss for the Cougars after pitching 2.1 innings and allowing one run on zero hits and four walks. Junior Adam Plutko started the game for UCLA, lasting five innings and being charged with four runs on eight hits.

UCLA took the early lead in the top of the second, starting when Zeile reached on a throwing error by Washington State shortstop Trace Tam Sing. Senior Cody Regis singled in the next at-bat, moving to Zeile to second to bring up junior Pat Gallagher. Gallagher laid a bunt down the third base line and Cougar starting pitcher Joe Pistorese threw the ball down the right field line, allowing Zeile to score to make it 1-0 Bruins. Two batters later with the bases loaded, junior Brian Carroll drew a walk to bring in Regis and increase the lead to 2-0.

The Bruins tacked another run in the top of the third, when junior Pat Valaika singled in sophomore Kevin Kramer from second to give UCLA a 3-0 advantage. Then in the top of the fourth, UCLA added two more to make it 5-0. With Gallagher on third and one out, Carroll singled to left to bring Gallagher in and give the Bruins a 4-0 lead. Then in the next at-bat, sophomore Eric Filia bunted for a base hit and advanced to second on another throwing error by Pistorese. Carroll came around to score from first on the error and UCLA took its 5-0 lead to the bottom of the fourth.

The Cougars got one back in the bottom half of the inning, when Monda, who started the game in right field, scored on a fielder's choice with the bases loaded to make it 5-1 Bruins. The inning wasn't over though, as Plutko walked Tam Sing to load the bases again with two outs. But Plutko hung tough and got Trek Stemp to ground into a fielder's choice to escape the jam.

Washington State put another run across in the bottom of the fifth when Yale Rosen doubled in Adam Nelubowich from first to cut the deficit to three. The Cougars threatened again in the bottom of the sixth, getting a leadoff double and a bunt single to chase Plutko from the game. With runners on first and third and nobody out, freshman James Kaprielian came in and allowed Cougar second baseman Shea Donlin to score on a wild pitch, making it 5-3 Bruins. Stemp then singled in Austin Pernell to cut the deficit to one before Nelubowich tied it at 5-5 with a RBI single up the middle.

The tie would be short-lived though, as UCLA took back the lead in the top of the sixth. With the bases loaded and one out, Regis hit into what looked to be a double play, but he legged it out and beat the throw, allowing Kramer to score and giving the Bruins a 6-5 lead.

UCLA held the lead for an inning but the Cougars tied it up again in the bottom of the eighth. Junior Zack Weiss gave up a single with one out, which prompted head coach John Savage to bring in Berg from the bullpen. Berg then allowed back-to-back singles to Collin Slaybaugh and Nelubowich to tie it at 6-6. However, Carroll made a huge play on Nelubowich's single, throwing out Slaybaugh at third with a great throw from center to get the crucial second out of the inning.

Berg got the final out of the eighth and in the top of the ninth, the Bruins had a great chance to take the lead with the bases loaded and two outs. But Monda, who moved to the mound in the ninth, struck out Gallagher to end the inning.

Neither side scored in the 10th, but in the 11th Zeile put the Bruins ahead with a big two-out single to left, scoring Filia and making it 7-6 in UCLA's favor. Berg then pitched a scoreless bottom half of the inning and the Bruins went on to claim the 7-6 victory.

Kramer led the UCLA offense, going 2-4 with two runs scored. Carroll followed that up with a two RBI performance while Valaika, Zeile and Regis each recorded a hit and a RBI. In addition, Valaika and Filia also drew two walks apiece in the game with Filia adding a run.

The Bruins (26-12, 10-6 Pac-12) continue their series with the Cougars (19-19, 6-10 Pac-12) tomorrow afternoon at 2 p.m. Junior right-hander Nick Vander Tuig (6-3, 1.87 ERA) will take the mound for UCLA.
