Eugene, Ore. - The 13th-ranked UCLA Baseball team dropped its series finale with Oregon, falling to the Ducks, 5-3, on Sunday afternoon at PK Park.
Sophomore Grant Watson took the loss for the Bruins, allowing four runs on five hits in 4.1 innings pitched. Jake Reed earned the win for the Ducks, giving up three runs on six hits in six innings of work. Jimmie Sherfy picked up the save for Oregon after pitching a scoreless ninth.
After two scoreless innings, junior Brenton Allen put the Bruins on top in the top of the third, scoring sophomore Shane Zeile from second with a double to left-center, making it 1-0 UCLA. The Ducks would tie it up in the bottom of the inning though, as Aaron Payne singled home J.J. Altobelli from second to even the game at 1-1. The threat wasn't over as Ryon Healy came to the plate with runners on first and second and two outs. Healy hit a hard grounder to short, but junior Pat Valaika made a great stop and recovered to throw out Healy to end the inning.
In the top of the fifth, UCLA went back ahead thanks to a two-run inning. After junior Kevin Williams singled with one out, Allen singled him over to third, advancing to second himself on an error by Scott Heineman. Junior Brian Carroll came to bat with runners on second and third and grounded out to shortstop, allowing Williams to score and giving the Bruins a 2-1 advantage. Sophomore Eric Filia singled in Allen on the next at-bat to make it 3-1 in UCLA's favor.
Oregon would not stay down for long though, scoring four runs in the bottom half of the inning. After Watson loaded the bases with one out, the Ducks brought home a run off of junior Ryan Deeter after Healy grounded into a fielder's choice that scored Altobelli. Two batters later, Heineman came to the plate with the bases loaded and hit a triple to right-center, clearing the bases and giving Oregon a 5-3 lead.
From there, the Bruins were unable to muster any offense and they went on to fall to the Ducks, 5-3.
Allen led the Bruins at the plate, going 2-3 with a RBI and a run scored. Zeile and Williams each recorded a hit and a run scored while Carroll and Filia added a RBI apiece.
UCLA (25-11) returns home for a Tuesday night matchup against Long Beach State (17-20) at 6 p.m. out at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
