McPhillips Wins Pac-12 Singles Championship

April 28, 2013

Ojai, Calif. - UCLA freshman Kyle McPhillips became the seventh women's tennis player in school history to take home the Pac-12 Singles Championship, as she downed Stanford's Krista Hardebeck on Sunday's at Ojai's Libbey Park.

McPhillips, the tournament's eighth seed from Willoughby, Ohio, turned in perhaps the most dominating performance ever in the women's final in Ojai, winning the final 11 games of the match in a 6-1, 6-0 victory over the third-seeded Hardebeck. McPhillips was never broken in the match, converting her first match point when Hardebeck sent a backhand into the net.

It marked the fifth victory of the tournament for McPhillips, who also knocked off the tournament's top seed, Zsofia Susanyi of Cal, in Friday's quarterfinals.

McPhillips becomes the first Bruin player to win the main draw singles title in Ojai since Yasmin Schnack in 2010. She is the first UCLA freshman to capture the title since Sara Walker in 2000.

UCLA's Courtney Dolehide and Pamela Montez came up just short in the Pac-12 Doubles Championship on Sunday, falling to top-seeded Kaitlyn Christian and Sabrina Santamaria of USC, 6-3, 6-3.
