Redshirt junior Julian Wruck has been named the West Region Men's Field Athlete of the Year, the United States Track & Field/Cross Country Coaches Association announced Monday. The region honors are voted on by the nation's coaches.

Wruck cruised to a first place finish at the NCAA West Region Preliminary Championships, throwing 63.95m/209-10 to punch his ticket to Eugene for this week's NCAA Outdoor Championships at Historic Hayward Field. His performance was ten-plus feet further than the top mark of his closest competitor.

For the Australian discus thrower, this announcement comes on the heels on one of the most historic performances in NCAA discus history. This past weekend, Wruck became the NCAA's all-time leader in the discus event, throwing 68.16m/223-7 at the Claremont Hammer and Discus Elite Invitational. His performance Saturday, however, was not highlighted solely by the record-breaking throw. Wruck had five throws Saturday that rank inside the collegiate all-time top-ten for the men's discus, including four of the top five. He had previously held the No. 5 all-time collegiate throw (66.32m/217-7; No. 1 all-time in UCLA history), a mark set back in April while competing at the Australian Athletics Championships in Sydney.
