LOS ANGELES - Sophomore Stephany LaRosa posted her fifth career, two-homer game, senior B.B. Bates had three-quarters of the cycle with a single, a double and a triple and sophomore Ally Carda struck out seven in six innings, as the 15th-ranked Bruins defeated Loyola Marymount 8-4 on Wednesday at Easton Stadium.
The Bruins (33-17) had 10 hits as a team, as Bates and LaRosa each posted their team-leading 17th multiple-hit games of the season, while sophomore Gracie Goulder had two hits for her 15 multi-hit contest of the year.
Carda improved to 21-9 on the year, giving up four runs (one earned), three hits and two walks in six innings. She had 1-2-3 innings in the first, third and fifth, and also posted three strikeouts in the second and two in the third. Junior Jessica Hall tossed the seventh inning, fanning two and walking one.
The Bruins jumped all over the Lions with four runs in their first at-bat. LaRosa led off with her 12th homer of the season to left to make it 1-0. Bates then doubled to left-center, and one out later, scored on a single to left by freshman Mysha Sataraka, who advanced to second on an error by Meghan Von Behren in left. Hall followed with a double to right to score Sataraka to make it 3-0. One out later, freshman Brittany Moeai grounded one to Stephanie Maciel at short, but the LMU infielder booted it, as Hall scored from second to make it 4-0.
UCLA added two more in the second. With one out, LaRosa hit her second homer of the game to the same spot in left, her 13th of the year, to make it 5-0. Bates followed with a triple down the right-field line and Carda drew a walk. Carda then took off for second on a delayed double steal, but was thrown out, however Bates still came home to score the Bruins' sixth run.
The Lions (30-22) cut their deficit in half with three in the fourth. With runners at second and first and one out, Sterling Shuster doubled to left-center to score Meghan Harman to make it 6-1. One out later, Meghan Von Behren singled to right to plate Skylar Segura and Shuster to get LMU to within three. The Lions added another run in the sixth to get to within a pair at 6-4, as Shuster drove in Hannah Montalban on an RBI ground out.
UCLA got some insurance in the bottom of the sixth. Moeai led off with a double to left-center and was pinch-run for by sophomore Kaelin Sprawls, who moved to third on a bunt single back to the circle by Goulder. Freshman Allexis Bennett then sacrificed Goulder to third, and after a walk to sophomore Sam Duran, Bates singled to left to bring home Sprawls and Goulder to make it 8-4.
