CORVALLIS, Ore. - Sophomores Ally Carda and Gracie Goulder and freshmen Allexis Bennett and Britney Rodriguez all had two-hit games, Carda and senior B.B. Bates homered and junior Jessica Hall earned the complete-game win, as the 15th-ranked Bruins defeated Oregon State 4-3 on Friday at the OSU Softball Complex.
The Bruins (36-18, 9-14 Pac-12) had 11 hits as a team, with seven different players posting at least one base knock. In the circle, Hall struck out two in seven innings, giving up three runs, seven hits and two walks. She had 1-2-3 innings in the fourth and fifth.
In the bottom of the first, the Beavers (33-21, 8-15) had a runner at third and one out, but a double play ended the inning. Lea Cavestany led off with a double and moved to third on an Ashley Sanchez sacrifice. Elizabeth Santana then grounded a ball to third, as freshman Mysha Sataraka threw her out. Cavestany would dash home on the throw to first, but Carda threw home to freshman Brittany Moeai to record the double play.
The Bruins scored a run in the top of the second. With one out and Hall at first after reaching on a fielder's choice, Rodriguez singled to center and a sacrifice bunt by senior Devon Lindvall moved runners to third and second. Goulder followed with a single to the 5-6 hole, as Santana dove and tried to force Rodriguez at third, but was late. Hall would score, as Goulder picked up the RBI to make it 1-0.
The Beavers took the lead with a pair in their half of the second. With one out, Desiree Beltran walked, and one out later, moved to second when Ya Garcia was hit by a pitch. After Beltran and Garcia pulled off a double steal, Ally Kutz blooped a single to center to score both to put the home team up 2-1.
In the third, UCLA led off the inning with back-to-back jacks. Bates started it off by hitting the first pitch of the frame out to left, her 24th homer of the season, which ties her with Tairia Mims for the second-most long balls in a single season in Bruin history. Carda followed that with a homer to left-center, her 16th of the year, to put the Bruins up 3-2. Sophomore Stephany LaRosa had a double and freshman Mysha Sataraka walked, as both moved up a base after a Hall sacrifice. But Oregon State's Tina Andreana induced Rodriguez and Lindvall into a pair of ground outs to end the inning.
The Bruins extended their lead in the fourth. With one out, Bennett singled up the middle, Bates was hit by a pitch and Carda singled to left to plate Bennett to make it 4-2.
After Oregon State left two on in the sixth, the Bruins had a chance to get some insurance runs in the seventh, but left the bases loaded. Carda was hit by a pitch to open the inning and was pinch-run for by sophomore Sam Duran. One out later, sophomore Marisa Schwartz drew a walk and was pinch-run for by sophomore Kaelin Sprawls. One more out later, Rodriguez singled to right and sophomore Tara Mueller ran for her. However, Moeai fouled out to the catcher Kutz, who made a diving play in foul ground to end the inning.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Beavers scored one, but left the tying run 60 feet away. With one out, Cavestany doubled to left-center and Christie Langlois singled up the middle to plate her to make it 4-3, as Langlois moved to second on the throw home and was pinch-run for by Sanchez. One out later, Sanchez moved to third on a wild pitch, but Hall struck out Oregon State's top hitter Natalie Hampton to end the game.
