UCLA's top scholar-athletes were honored on May 6 at the Seventh Annual UCLA Scholar-Athlete Banquet, sponsored by Rose Gilbert in memory of Maggie Gilbert.
Deeter and Goodrich were also honored with the Athletic Director's Academic Excellence Award for making the Director's Honor Roll (3.0 or higher GPA) every quarter they were at UCLA. Also receiving this distinction were swimmers Maggy Boyd and Stephanie Christofferson, golfers Pedro Figueiredo and Bobby Lange, track and field's Alec Govi and David Klarer, men's volleyball player Kene Izuchukwu, women's volleyball player Bojana Todorovic, men's soccer player Ryan Lee, women's soccer players Alana Munger and Chelsea Stewart, gymnast Lichelle Wong, water polo player Leslee Kaczmarek, and rower Emily McLaughlin.
Twenty-two student-athletes were named to the All-Academic team, which is comprised of the person from each team with the highest cumulative GPA. The overall GPA of the 2012-13 UCLA All-Academic team is 3.64. All-Academic team honorees were third-year honorees Deeter (baseball) and Khalid McCaskill (men's basketball), Maddi Mobley (softball), Munger (women's soccer), Jerry Neuheisel (football), Samantha Peszek (gymnastics), Kaitlin Ray (women's tennis), Spencer Rowe (men's volleyball) and Ryoto Tachi (men's tennis).
Football player Luke Gane and track & field's Turquoise Thompson, who have each battled through serious medical issues, earned the Courage and Character Award, presented to one male and one female who overcame adversity and hardship to excel in their sport and in the classroom.
The Maggie Gilbert Academic Achievement Award, presented to two senior student-athletes who improved their GPA throughout their years at UCLA and were able to excel in their sport, was presented to football player Owamagbe Odighizuwa and gymnast Vanessa Zamarripa.
Williams from women's basketball and Izuchukwu from men's volleyball earned the AS2 Success Award, given to one self-sufficient male and female graduating student-athlete who takes advantage of all the opportunities and resources available to them at UCLA and will apply them to the successful futures that lie ahead for them.
UCLA student-athletes in the 2013 winter and 2012 fall quarters combined to earn 603 spots on the Director's Honor Roll. In the fall, 133 student-athletes acheived a 3.5 GPA or better, with 23 earning a perfect 4.0. In the winter quarter, 114 had a 3.5 or higher GPA, with 17 earning 4.0s.
