Los Angeles, Calif. - Behind six strong innings from freshman right-hander Cody Poteet and a 13-hit performance from its offense, the ninth-ranked UCLA Baseball team defeated the UC Irvine Anteaters, 8-1, on Tuesday night at Jackie Robinson Stadium.

Poteet's six innings pitched were a new season-high for the freshman, as were the five batters he struck out. He also allowed just two hits and did not walk a batter in his six innings of work to earn his third win of the year. Evan Brock suffered the loss for the Anteaters after lasting just 0.2 innings and giving up a run on three walks.

Poteet cruised through the first three innings, retiring nine of the first 10 batters he faced. UCLA then jumped ahead in the bottom of the third with a run off of Brock. With one out, sophomore Eric Filia was hit by pitch and after back-to-back walks, the bases were loaded for sophomore Shane Zeile. Zeile then hit a sacrifice fly to right to bring in Filia and give the Bruins a 1-0 advantage.

The Bruins added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth, starting when Zeile reached first on a throwing error by Chris Rabago with one out. After a Pat Gallagher single moved and a fly out by Christoph Bono, junior Brenton Allen came to the plate and singled to center, plating Zeile and making it 2-0 UCLA.

After Poteet pitched a scoreless sixth, UCLA tacked on another run in the bottom half of the inning when Filia singled in sophomore Kevin Kramer from second to increase the Bruins' lead to three. UCLA then broke the game open in the seventh, going off for five runs in the inning. After three consecutive singles by Gallagher, Bono and Allen loaded the bases with nobody out, junior Brian Carroll drew a walk to bring in Gallagher and make it 4-0. Kramer then stepped to the plate and cleared the bases with a triple to left-center, giving UCLA a seven-run advantage. Kramer would eventually come home on a wild pitch to give the Bruins a comfortable 8-0 lead.

UC Irvine would prevent the shutout with a run in the eighth, but that would be all and the Bruins claimed an 8-1 victory over the Anteaters.

Kramer led the UCLA offense on the night, going 2-5 with a double, a triple and two runs scored while matching a career-high with three RBI. Filia, Gallagher and Bono each added two hits as well while Allen posted his first career three-hit game. Finally, senior Cody Regis reached base in three of his five plate appearances, earning three walks to bring his career total to 117.

The Bruins (28-13, 11-7 Pac-12) will return to Pac-12 play this weekend as they host the Utah Utes (16-23, 5-16 Pac-12) from Friday, May 3 to Sunday, May 5 at Jackie Robinson Stadium. Game times are 6 p.m., 2 p.m. and 1 p.m. respectively.
