Norton and Reeves Go 2-0 on Day One of AVCA Nationals

GULF SHORES, Ala. - Juniors Meg Norton and Kelly Reeves went 2-0 in pool play on day one of the AVCA Collegiate Sand Volleyball National Championships, defeating pairs squads from Pacific and UAB. Sophomore Zoë Nightingale and freshman Becca Strehlow dropped both of their matches on Friday.

Norton and Reeves opened the morning with a 21-11, 21-9 victory over Pacific's Hannah Clancy and Katarina Schulz. After a break, the Bruins' top pair posted another straight-set victory, this time over UAB's Bethanie Thomas and Kiriana Hirini, 21-12, 21-11.

Norton and Reeves are one of two 2-0 squads in their five-team pool, along with FIU's Jessica Mendoza and Maryna Samoday, as those two teams square off on Saturday at 8 a.m. PT. The UCLA junior pair will also play Georgia State's Lane Carico and Katie Madewell at 11 a.m. PT.

The top two pairs teams in each pool automatically qualify for Sunday's 16-team championship bracket, while the third-place pair has another chance to qualify for the championship round.

Nightingale and Strehlow dropped a pair of straight-set decisions, falling to FIU's Kate Stepanova and Ksenia Sukhareva, 21-15, 21-18, and Loyola Marymount's Felicia Arriola and Litara Keil, 21-13, 21-19.

The #2 UCLA tandem plays twice on Saturday, facing Jacksonville's Sammie Strausbaugh and Taylor Nyquist at 7 a.m. PT and Saint Mary's Dalas Dodd and Jordan Shaw at 8 a.m.
