Eric Sprague, ranked among the top boys volleyball players in nation, signed a National Letter of Intent to attend UCLA, Head Coach John Speraw announced this week.
A senior at Bentley High School in Lafayette, CA, Sprague has been an All-BCL East First-Team selection at Bentley since 2010. The 6-8 middle blocker led The Phoenix to the league title match earlier this week, recording 30 kills in a five-set defeat. The Phoenix (19-4) earned the No.2 seed in the North Coast Section Division III playoffs.
"Coach Speraw and his assistant coaches are arguably the best coaching staff in the country," said Sprague. "So getting to work with them is an unbelievable opportunity. Combining that with the strength of UCLA's academics, makes UCLA a dream school for me."
Sprague's club team, Diablo Valley 18s, captured first place recently in the NCVA Far Western Junior Qualifier. In addition, Sprague was a Junior Nationals All-Tournament Team Club Division selection in 2011 and 2012.
"Eric Sprague completes a solid recruiting class for us," said Speraw. "We feel he is a great fit for our program and that he will represent UCLA well in the future. Brad Keller, our lead recruiter, did an outstanding job bringing in players this year, considering the late start he had in the recruiting process."
Sprague became the eighth high school player to sign with UCLA in 2012-13. In November, UCLA announced the signings of Jackson Bantle (Loyola HS), Grant Chalmers (Mira Costa HS), Michael Fisher (Hawai'i Baptist Academy), Oliver Martin (Calabasas HS), Jake Reeves (Torrey Pines HS), Hagen Smith (Loyola HS) and Mitch Stahl (Chambersburg HS, PA).
