Amelia Island, Fla. - UCLA men's tennis player Dennis Novikov picked up his first pro singles title on Sunday, as the Bruin took home the title at the Amelia Island Futures Championships, avenging a loss that he suffered in the final of last month's NCAA Championships.
Novikov, who will be a junior at UCLA this fall, downed qualifier Jarmere Jenkins of the USA, 1-6, 7-6(5), 6-4 in Sunday's singles final. The two players squared off less than a month ago in the final of the NCAA Team Championships, with Virginia's Jenkins winning that match 7-6(3), 6-3 at No. 1 singles.
Novikov was seeded No. 7 in the singles draw at Amelia Island. He won five matches at the event, including a 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 victory over top-seeded Chase Buchanan in the semifinals. Novikov and Buchanan played doubles together at the event, reaching the semifinals.
Novikov is competing in another futures event this week in Rochester, N.Y., where he is also playing doubles with teammate Marcos Giron.
