Hungary Defeats USA, 12-7, in World University Games Quarterfinals

KAZAN, Russia -- Attacker Paul Reynolds and utility Danny McClintick led Team USA with two goals apiece, but Hungary pulled off a 12-7 win on July 13 to advance to the semifinals of the World University Games in Kazan, Russia.

The United States (2-1-3) will face Australia (2-0-4) in the consolation bracket for the right to play in the fifth place game on July 15 at 4:30 a.m. (PT).

In addition to the two goals by Reynolds and McClintick, Team USA also received one goal each from attackers Daniel Lenhart and Jack Fellner and center Alec Zwaneveld.

Tamas Mezei got Hungary on the board first with a goal at two meters at the 2:28 mark of the first period. Then Marton Toth made it 2-0 when he converted a penalty shot (1:41). Reynolds cut the deficit in half for Team USA with a goal from five meters with 1:13 left in the first period. Then Zwaneveld tied it at 2-2 with a goal at two meters off a nice feed from McClintick (0:32). The Americans found themselves trailing 3-2 at the end of the first by surrendering a late goal (0:04) at five meters from Marton Halek.

Team USA got an equalizer from Lenhart on a five meter shot (assist by Reynolds) to start the second period (7:07). Zsolt Juhasz put Hungary up 4-3 with a score from distance with 4:00 left in the second stanza. Then McClintick tied it up at 4-4 on a power play (3:37). Marton Bence Chilko scored on an extra man opportunity to put Hungary up 5-4 (3:00). Halek then scored from five meters (1:27) to give Hungary a 6-4 lead at the break. 

Balazs Somogyi extended Hungary's lead to 7-4 with an exclusion goal with 6:32 left in the third period. Hungary scored four straight unanswered goals with a counter attack strike from Chilko to make it 8-4 (2:39). Fellner snapped that streak with a shot from distance to make it 8-5 with 2:16 remaining in the third. But Hungary ended the period with two more goals to lead 10-5 heading into the fourth. Toth scored a power play goal at the 1:00 mark and then David Szecsi scored from two meters with 0:04 on the clock.

McClintick (6:49) and Reynolds (5:24) opened the final period with back-to-back scores from distance to close the gap to 10-7. Adam Szentesi pushed Hungary's lead to 11-7 with a goal from center with 5:04 remaining. Gabor Kovacs ended the scoring with a counter attack goal with 2:31 left in the fourth period.

USA goalkeeper Garrett Danner played a solid game in goal and was credited with 10 saves. He stopped 10 of the 22 shots by Hungary, or 45.5 percent of its shots. David Bisztritsanyi played in the cage for Hungary, making seven stops (out of 14 shots, 50.0 percent).

Defender Chris Wendt won the only sprint for Team USA (Reynolds 0-for-2, Lenhart 0-for-1). Danner again led the squad with a tournament-best three steals while McClintick led Team USA with two field blocks.
