UCLA junior Matt Pinizzotto fell in the first round of match play at the 113th U.S. Amateur Championship Wednesday at The Country Club in Brookline, MA.
UCLA’s only entrant in the 2013 championship, Pinizzotto rallied from three holes down on the front nine, only to see a one-hole advantage vanish on the 17th and 18th holes
Pinizzotto’s opponent, Temple University sophomore Brandon Matthews, built a 3-hole lead after five holes before Pinizzotto won holes six through eight with two birdies and a par. He lost the next two holes, but squared the match again at the par 5 12th with a par. He won the 13th with a birdie 3 and the 14th with a par 4. Matthews birdied the 15th with a birdie and the 16th was halved. With a 1-up lead and two holes to play, Pinizzotto double-bogeyed the 17th and 18th holes to lose the match.
