USA Takes Fifth Place with 9-7 Win Over Spain at FINA Junior Worlds

SZOMBATHELY, Hungary -- The USA Men's Junior National Team took fifth place at the FINA Men's Junior World Championships, defeating Spain 9-7. The win avenged an 8-6 loss to Spain in pool play on the opening day of the tournament.

Four different players scored two goals each and UCLA's Garrett Danner added six saves in the victory. Bruins Alec Zwaneveld and Chancellor Ramirez each scored twice, as did Stanford's Bret Bonanni and Alex Bowen. The United States finished the tournament with a 5-2 record. Spain struck first, scoring a goal less than a minute into the contest for a 1-0 lead. Ramirez answered for the United States with two straight goals to take a 2-1 lead with 5:29 left in the first period. Zwaneveld closed out the scoring in the first with a goal for a 3-1 lead.

The United States kept up the attack to start the second period with goals from Bowen and Bonanni to take a 5-1 lead with 3:05 to go. Spain answered with two straight scores to close out the half, trailing 5-3 at the break.

The third period belonged to Team USA as they blanked Spain 4-0. Bowen and UCLA's Jack Fellner scored back-to-back goals to extend the Americans lead to 7-3 at the 3:59 mark of the third quarter. Bonanni and Zwaneveld added two more goals and after the third period, the United States was in command ahead 9-3.

Spain staged a rally in the fourth, blanking the United State while scoring four goals to make a large dent in their deficit. They would draw to within 9-7 with 1:22 remaining but would get no closer as Team USA came away with the two-goal victory.

The United States was 6-for-8 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty shot while Spain was 3-for-6 on power plays and converted its only penalty shot.
