UCLA Drops First Match of Season, 1-0, to No. 1 North Carolina
By: UCLA Athletics
UCLA goalkeeper Katelyn Rowland displayed a Herculean effort against top-ranked North Carolina, facing 23 shots and making a career-high seven saves, but the one goal that slipped past her was the difference-maker in a 1-0 loss to the defending national champions Friday night in the Duke Nike Classic.

Rowland kept the No. 2/3 Bruins in the game with her outstanding play in goal, making two spectacular saves in the first half on what looked to be sure goals. In the 20th minute, North Carolina's Crystal Dunn sent a shot headed to the upper right corner, but Rowland leaped up to make the save. A minute later, it was a Bruin defender who made a big save, clearing a shot off the line after a corner kick. Rowland came up big again in the 29th minute, making a big save on an Alex Newfield free kick.

The two teams went into the half knotted at 0-0, although UNC held a 13-2 first half shot advantage.

The Tar Heels continued to put the pressure on UCLA's defense in the second half. Kealia Ohai came close to breaking the scoreless tie in the 70th minute but hit the post. Rosie White gave the Bruins their best scoring opportunity just three minutes later but was saved by North Carolina's Bryane Heaberlin. Rowland made another miracle save on a Dunn shot from close range in the 76th minute, but Dunn, the reigning MAC Hermann Trophy winner, would not be denied on her next opportunity, hitting a shot past Rowland into the right corner from 10 yards out for the go-ahead goal at 78:40.

UCLA attempted to equalize, but Taylor Smith's shot in the 80th minute was saved, and Caprice Dydasco and White were off-target on their shots in the final three minutes.

The loss was UCLA's first of the season. The Bruins are now 4-1-0, while UNC remains undefeated at 5-0-0. UCLA will face No. 12 Duke in the last game of the Duke Nike Classic on Sunday, Sept. 8 at 10am PT.
