No. 2 UCLA Improves to 4-0 with Two Wins at Triton Invitational

LOS ANGELES -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team improved to 4-0 on the season with a pair of lopsided victories today at the Triton Invitational. The Bruins defeated Cal Lutheran 21-7 and No. 11 UC San Diego 16-6. Junior Paul Reynolds led the Bruins in both games today, scoring three goals in each victory.

The Bruins jumped out to a 7-1 lead at the end of the first period against Cal Lutheran. Senior Chris Wendt got the Bruins on the board first with a goal at the 7:20 mark. Wendt then scored a power play goal (6:13) and freshman Lovre Milos scored with 5:53 left to put UCLA up 3-0. After Cal Lutheran scored, UCLA received goals from senior Lucas Reynolds (4:49), freshman Gordon Marshall (4:01) and junior Chris Fahlsing (2:29). The Bruins ended the first quarter with a power play goal from Paul Reynolds with five seconds left.

Paul Reynolds opened the second quarter with a goal on the Bruins' first possession to lead 8-1. Freshmen Ryder Roberts and Milos scored back-to-back for UCLA (6:48 and 6:23) to push the lead to 10-1. After another goal by Cal Lutheran, Roberts scored again and then Wendt completed a hat trick as UCLA led 12-2. Cal Lutheran's Shea Craig scored a power play goal to cut the deficit to 12-3 at the break.

Paul Reynolds completed his hat trick to open the scoring in the third, followed by Marshall's second goal of the game, to give the Bruins a 14-3 lead. After a strike by CLU, sophomore Danny McClintick scored (3:46) and then redshirt freshman Rainer Sherwood scored the first goal of his collegiate career to extend the lead to 16-4. Jake Gallagher scored for the Kingsmen (1:28) and then Lucas Reynolds scored his second (0:18) to end the third period with UCLA leading 17-5.

Redshirt freshman Patrick Woepse opened the fourth with back-to-back goals and then junior Christopher Meinhold became the 11th different Bruin to score to put UCLA up 20-5 with 5:37 to go. Cal Lutheran scored back-to-back goals to make it 20-7, but Sherwood added his second goal to end the scoring at 21-7.

The Bruins were 3-for-5 on power plays while the Kingsmen were 4-for-9 on power plays. Neither team attempted a penalty shot.

Redshirt junior James Hartshorne tallied four saves while redshirt freshman Garrett Danner was credited with one stop in the cage for UCLA.

In the second game of the day, junior Daniel Lenhart opened the scoring at the 6:02 mark to give UCLA a 1-0 lead over No. 11 UC San Diego. Matt Michalko evened the game at 1-1 with an exclusion goal (4:05). But Bruin freshmen Milos and Roberts scored three straight goals at full strength (the first two by Milos) to end the first quarter with UCLA leading 4-1.

Lenhart's second goal of the game (5:58) gave the Bruins a 5-1 lead in the second period. David Higginson made it 5-2 with a power play strike (5:33) but Paul Reynolds answered an extra man goal for the Bruins. Wendt (2:44) and Marshall (0:45) then scored for UCLA to make it 8-2. Higginson ended the scoring in the first half to cut the deficit to 8-3 at halftime.

Milos completed his hat trick to open the scoring in the third period (5:55). McClintick made it 10-3 with a 6-on-5 score with 4:09 left. After Michalko scored for UCSD, the Bruins got back-to-back goals from Paul Reynolds (2:16) and Lucas Reynolds (0:07) to push the lead to 12-4 through three periods.

Paul Reynolds completed his hat trick to open the fourth quarter scoring (4:03). Tommy Friedrich made it 13-5 with a score for the Tritons, but UCLA answered with three straight goals to lead 16-5. The first was from redshirt freshman Alec Zwaneveld (2:20) and then senior Paul Pickell scored his first of the day (1:15). Lenhart completed his hat trick on a power play with 0:24 to go. Higginson scored a hat trick of his own with a goal with 0:03 left to end the scoring at 16-6.

The Bruins were 3-for-8 on power plays and did not attempt a penalty shot while UC San Diego was 2-for-9 on power plays and was denied on its only penalty shot.

Redshirt freshman Garrett Danner had a season-high 13 saves, including a big stop on the Tritons' penalty shot.
