The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team (4-0) will travel to Redlands, Calif., to participate in the Inland Empire Classic on Saturday, Sept. 14.
Under the tutelage of fifth-year head coach Adam Wright, UCLA will open the two-day tournament with the first match, a 9:00 a.m. bout at No. 18 Redlands. Then the Bruins will face Claremont-Mudd-Scripps for the second time this season (defeated the Stags 19-2 on Sept. 7) at 11:30 a.m. UCLA will end with a game vs. Whittier at 2:00 p.m. UCLA will not compete on the second day of the tournament (Sept. 15).
The Bruins are 17-0 all-time against Saturday's opponents. UCLA is 12-0 vs. Claremont-Mudd-Scripps, 4-0 against Redlands and 1-0 vs. Whittier.
OFF TO A HOT START:
Junior attacker Paul Reynolds (Santa Ana, Calif.) was named this week's UCLA/Muscle Milk Student-Athlete of the Week after leading UCLA to a 4-0 start with nine goals last weekend. He registered four goals in the 21-7 win over Cal Lutheran at the Triton Invitational (Sept. 8). He is currently shooting 50.0 percent (9-for-18) and is second on the team in steals with seven in four games.
Senior center Lucas Reynolds (Newport Beach, Calif.) is currently tied for second on the squad in scoring with seven goals. He is shooting at an astronomical clip of 87.5 percent (7-for-8) on the young season.
THANK YOU McCLINTICK:
Sophomore utility Danny McClintick (Agoura Hills, Calif.) currently leads the team in assists with nine in the early going (2.3 apg). He has five goals on the year, including at least one in each of his first four games. Last year as a true freshman, he opened the season with at least one goal in the first nine games.
Freshman Attacker Lovre Milos (Zagreb, Croatia) and freshman center Gordon Marshall (Newcastle, Australia) are currently tied for second on the team in scoring (with Lucas Reynolds) with seven goals each. Both have scored at least one goal in each of their first four games, joining a total of five Bruins that can boast that (Lucas Reynolds, Danny McClintick and Alec Zwaneveld). Marshall leads the team in field blocks (three) and is second in exclusions drawn (six), while Milos is third on the team in assists (six) and is sixth in steals (three).
MORE FRESHMEN MAKING AN IMPACT:
Several other freshmen are off to good starts in 2013. Freshman attacker Jack Fellner (Orinda, Calif.) has one goal and two assists and leads the team with eight steals. He has had at least one steal in each game, including a team-high four in the win over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.
Redshirt freshman center Patrick Woepse (Tustin, Calif.) has three goals and one steal and leads the team in exclusions drawn with seven.
Redshirt freshman center Alec Zwaneveld (La Cañada, Calif.) is tied for fifth on the team in scoring with five goals (50.0 percent, 5-for-10) and also has tallied four steals, three exclusions drawn and one assist. He is also one of five Bruins to have scored at least one goal in all four games this season.
Freshman attacker Ryder Roberts (Vista, Calif.) has three goals and three steals and is second on the team in assists with eight (2.0 apg).
STEADY AS THEY GO:
Senior defender Chris Wendt (River Forest, Ill.) has scored five goals and is shooting 83.3 percent (5-for-6). He also has five assists, two steals and two field blocks.
Junior attacker Daniel Lenhart (Yorba Linda, Calif.) has scored five goals and is shooting 83.3 percent (5-for-6). He also has one steal and one assist.
Senior attacker Paul Pickell (Santa Ana, Calif.) has scored four goals and is shooting 80.0 percent (4-for-5). He also has one steal and one field block.
Junior attacker Christopher Meinhold (San Clemente, Calif.) has scored four goals and is shooting 66.7 percent (4-for-6). He also has four steals, four assists and two field blocks.
IN THE CAGE:
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper Garrett Danner (Coto de Caza, Calif.) has made two starts and played 5.0 quarters, racking up a team-high 16 saves, including a career-high 13 in the win over UC San Diego. He has a goals against average of 5.60.
Junior goalkeeper Stephen White (San Diego, Calif.) has made two starts and has played 5.5 quarters, registering nine saves. He has a goals against average of 4.36.
Redshirt junior James Hartshorne (Irvine, Calif.) has played 5.5 quarters and has tallied 11 saves. He also has a goals against average of 4.36.
