#13/15 UCLA Returns Home to Host New Mexico State

BRUINS RETURN HOME TO PLAY NEW MEXICO STATE — UCLA (2-0, ranked #13 in the Associated Press and 15th in the USA Today Coaches Poll) will host New Mexico State (0-3) on Saturday, Sept. 21. The game will kickoff at 7:37 p.m. PT and be televised by the Pac-12 Networks (Ted Robinson, Glenn Parker, Drea Avent).The Bruin IMG Radio Network (Chris Roberts, Matt Stevens and Wayne Cook) will air the contest on KTLK 1150am. The game will also be aired on SIRIUS (Ch. 85), XM (Ch. 85).

BRUINS VS. NEW MEXICO STATE — This will be the first meeting between the schools on the gridiron.

HONORARY CAPTAIN - Randy Cross, a 1975 First-Team All-America guard at UCLA, will be the honorary captain against New Mexico State. Cross lettered three seasons for the Bruins (1973-75), culminating in UCLA's 1976 Rose Bowl victory over top-ranked Ohio State.

BRUINS IN BRIEF - UCLA ended the Nebraska game by outscoring the home squad 38-0 over the final 37 minutes of the contest. Quarterback Brett Hundley completed his last 10 passes of the game and was a perfect 8 for 8 in the third quarter (UCLA did not throw a pass in the fourth quarter) with three scoring tosses. The comeback enabled the Bruins to overcome a 21-3 second quarter deficit. Linebacker Anthony Barr totaled a career-best 11 tackles, including two TFLs and three forced fumbles to key a Bruin defense which limited the Cornhuskers to 29 plays and 135 second-half yards.

Redshirt soph. QB Brett Hundley racked up 355 yards of total offense at Nebraska. He completed all eight of his passing attempts in the second half at Nebraska, three for touchdowns. In the second half of games this season, he has completed 20 of 24 passes for 304 yards and four touchdowns.

UCLA has outscored its opponents 72-7 in the second half of its first two games

UCLA tied a school record for third quarter points with 28 at Nebraska

Senior LB Anthony Barr recorded a career-high 11 tackles at Nebraska, including 2 TFLs and three forced fumbles

Junior LB Eric Kendricks finished with eight stops at Nebraska to snap an eight-game streak of double-digit tackles ..His 150 tackles in 2012 were the most by a Bruin since 1978 (Jerry Robinson 168 in 1978)

UCLA played 15 true freshmen in the 2013 opener; defensive back Priest Willis became the 16th true frosh to play when he appeared on special teams in Nebraska. UCLA played 26 total freshmen in 2012 -- 12 true and 14 redshirt freshmen.

The win against #23/15 Nebraska is the first against a ranked opponent on the road since the Bruins upset No. 7 Texas in Austin on Sept. 25, 2010

UCLA erased an 18-point deficit to beat Nebraska in Lincoln. The 18-point deficit ties for the seventh largest deficit overcome in Bruin history. The most is a 22-point deficit against Northwestern in the 2005 Sun Bowl.

Redshirt junior running back Jordon James rushed for 100 yards for the second straight game. James opened the season with 156 yards on 21 carries and then backed that up with a 105-yard effort on a career-high 22 carries against Nebraska.

Brett Hundley passed Bruin Heisman Trophy winner Gary Beban and Kevin Prince on the UCLA all-time passing yards list to move to ninth all time. Hundley finished the game with 294 yards to move his career total to 4,308 yards. Dennis Dummit sits at eighth all-time with 4,356 career passing yards.

UCLA has started one true frosh (Alex Redmond at OG) in the first two games of the season - In 2012, it started at least four freshmen on offense in all but the Holiday Bowl and as many as seven true freshmen on offense against Utah.

UCLA racked up 504 yards of offense at Nebraska after recording 647 yards of offense vs. Nevada, ninth on the all-time school list...It had not gained at least 500 yards of total offense in a three-game stretch during a season, prior to the 2012 season (complete records date back to 1965 season) ...Years in which UCLA has had at least three games, with at least 500-yards of total offense -- 2012 (4-Rice=646/Nebraska=653/Houston=567/Arizona=611); 2005 (3g); 1998 (5g); 1996 (3g); 1991 (4g); 1987 (3g); 1986 (4g); 1976 (5g); 1973 (5g) (dating back to 1965)         

With the win last week at Nebraska, the Bruins’ non-conference road record since 2000 is 10-7

UCLA has won 16 of its last 21 games when winning the turnover battle (.762) and owns a 15-31 record in its last 46 games (.311) when losing or tying the turnover ratio (beat Nevada despite losing TO battle 1-0, tied with NU 1-1)

UCLA is now 5-2 in true road games under Coach Mora...Last year, the Bruins won as many as four road games in a season for the first time since 2002 (4-2 on road in 2012)

Kenny Orjioke’s blocked punt vs. Nevada was the ninth kick blocked by the Bruins since Jim Mora became head coach

UCLA has won 12 of its last 13 games when it limits the opponent to less than 100 rushing yards (3-0 in 2012)

The 2012 Arizona game was the 18th straight game UCLA has won when holding the opponent to less than 20 points

Hundley is the first UCLA quarterback to ever throw for at least 300 yards in three straight games (305 Nebraska/320 Houston/372 Oregon St.). He is the third to total at least four, 300-yard games in a season.

12 different receivers caught at least one pass in the opener against Nevada

UCLA is wearing a No. 36 patch on its uniform to honor the memory of Nick Pasquale, a redshirt freshman receiver, who passed away in a tragic accident on Sept. 8.

A school-record 17 true freshmen played for the Bruins in 1977. In recent years, nine played in 2005, eight in 2006, two in 2007 and 11 in 2008. UCLA played 10 freshmen in 2009 and again in 2010. One first-year player saw action in 2011.

AT THE STARTING LINE — Redshirt junior offensive guard Xavier Su’a-Filo tops four Bruin players with at least 20 career starts. Su’a-Filo has started all 29 games in his career. The defensive player with the most starts is senior end Cassius Marsh (28). The player with the longest starting streak is redshirt junior LB Eric Kendricks (19).

ROSE BOWL ADVANTAGE - UCLA has won 24 of its last 29 (.828) non-conference matchups played in the Rose Bowl.

BRUINS IN THE POLLS — UCLA was last as high as 13th in the Associated Press rankings during the week of Sept. 10, 2007 when it was listed 11th. It moved as high as 15th in the AP poll and 16th in the USA Today Coaches Poll last season. It was last in the top ten of the Associated Press poll in the 2005 season when it peaked at No. 7 during a 10-2 campaign.
