BERKELEY, Calif. -- The No. 2 UCLA men's water polo team improved to 9-0 on the season with a 10-4 win over No. 6 UC Santa Barbara (6-1) this afternoon in the quarterfinals of the NorCal Invitational. Junior Paul Reynolds completed a hat trick to lead the Bruins.
UCLA controlled the action in the first period, scoring the only goal on a counter attack by Reynolds at the 3:53 mark.
Senior Paul Pickell opened the second period with a nice drive and finish to give the Bruins a 2-0 lead (6:49). Reynolds then converted a penalty shot to extend UCLA's lead to 3-0 with 4:05 to go in the second. After UCSB scored on a power play (3:27), the Bruins reeled off two more goals before the half. Freshman Ryder Roberts scored an exclusion goal to make it 4-1 (1:13) and Reynolds completed his hat trick with a front court goal with :23 to go to give the Bruins a 5-1 lead at the break.
Senior Aimone Barabino struck first for UCLA in the third period with a goal from two meters to make it 6-1 (7:31). After another goal by UCSB, redshirt junior Cristiano Mirarchi scored on a counter attack to put the Bruins up 7-2 with :53 left in the third period. Santa Barbara got a power play goal (:27) to head into the final period trailing 7-3.
Sophomore Danny McClintick scored from the front court to open the fourth quarter (5:59). Freshman Jack Fellner then scored back-to-back goals (power play at 3:05 and counter attack at 1:14) to push the lead to 10-3. UCSB scored a late goal on a 6-on-5 opportunity (:37) to provide the final score of 10-4.
The Bruins were 2-for-6 on power plays while UC Santa Barbara was 3-for-11. UCLA was 1-for-1 on penalty shots. UCSB didn't attempt a penalty shot.
Redshirt freshman Garrett Danner started in goal and played the entire game, registering nine saves.
The Bruins advance to the semifinals were they will face the winner of No. 9 Long Beach State/No. 4 California on Sunday at 12:15 p.m.
