Thompson, the 21st seed in the 128-player qualifying singles draw, downed Joe Salisbury of Memphis, 6-4, 6-4. He previously defeated Nadine Indre of Western Michigan in Monday's opening round 4-6, 6-4, 6-1. Next up is a showdown with fifth-seeded Florent Diep of Florida on Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. (CST).
In doubles, UCLA's Marcos Giron and Mackenzie McDonald reached the third round of qualifying and are now two wins away from reaching the main draw. They opened up the tournament with an 8-6 victory over Tulsa's Carlos Bautista and Daniel Santos. Giron and McDonald advanced to the third round by default when their opponents, Gonzalo Blanco and Yvon Haessig of USC Upstate, failed to show up for the match.
